Here are a couple of candid photos, taken for Life magazine, backstage during preps for the 30th
Annual Academy Awards, in which Clark apparently had some participation. I would love to know
if there were any footage of him....

And here he is with is own, one and only Oscar, for It Happened One Night (but I still say he
should have won for GWTW).

Publicity stills:

Vic Fleming's Adventure - with Joan Blondell (cute!)

With Norma Shearer in A Free Soul, the first movie which, in my opinion. directly capitalized
upon his sex appeal.

An autographed picture (look what he wrote to some happy girl! The picture would have melted in my hand...)

...and signing autographs for young fans...

Great pics, April. Ah, those cigarettes. Never out of his big mitt. If only he'd known that his chances of seeing his son might have been better without that little anxiety reliever. I particularly like the one below where he appears to have just entered the door, home from a day at MGM's velvet-lined salt mines!

Did he have grey eyes? I never noticed before....

I gotta say, no man looked better than Gable in a leather flight cap....

I want to know who said what backstage at the academy awards.... I am guessing it was Niven who told the story that has them all cracking up.... what a GREAT photo.

After Office Hours and Adventure stand out.... I love his scrunched up face when he looks puzzled or bemused.

But the autographed one, WOW...... I don't have a word strong enough for the feeling that one gives me - you are right... it would have burst into flames if I had been holding on to it....

Green...he had green eyes. Sigh.

I still have a lot more to post, I'm just rather lazy at the moment.

If you have any color photos, I'd love to see those emerald peepers, April--when you have time and the energy, friend.

That should be an interesting search, there aren't too many high quality color photo scans out
there of him. I'll see what I can find.

In the meantime, you mentioned Clark was "smoking"?
:D

You have posted some great pixs April. Gable was the epitome of the male movie star...BTW this picture is from "Strange Interlude" (1932), which was the first film in which Clark appeared sporting his famous moustache.

Thank you for correcting my mistake, Feo! Strange Interlude is aptly titled. It's one of the oddest
films Gable ever did. Here is a shot of him in the "old age" make-up. Ironic he never lived to be
that "old".

Why, you're welcome, Chris! I didn't know you were a Gable fan?

Have you ever seen The Painted Desert? I never have and I'm hoping to find a copy
of it some day.

I'm a fan. I've seen nearly everything he did. My favorite performances run from "It Happened One Night" to "Command Decision." I also enjoyed "Idiot's Delight" among others.

A PM is coming to you.
