My presence contributes to the "diverse" part...

Looking back and considering Hawks' career a bit more closely, I suppose my vote should have been more difficult than it was (though after giving it some more thought, I would still back Powell). Hawks made quite a few films I count among my favorites, and I should probably have given more consideration to his contribution to the art of screwball comedy (which I still believe is the most difficult genre to do well, having seen SO MANY rotten comedies). But Powell's films are much more unique to me - and not just from the standpoint of that gorgeous color which so many consider to be his trademark. His films are full of wit, often precisely and deliberately paced [among other things, Black Narcissus is a very well-crafted thriller], and have stayed planted in my mind long after I've watched (and rewatched) them. I agree with ChiO that A Matter of Life and Death is one of the most beautiful of films, and the opening lingers in the memory not only because of the visuals, but because the dialogue is so brilliant and the characters so memorable.

I guess I also find it surprising that a British director was one of our top two. Among my acquaintances, there are quite a few who tend to downplay the contributions of the British to world cinema (they prefer the French, Italians, and Japanese).
