MikeBSG wrote:Today I watched "Invisible Ghost" (1941) directed by Joseph H. Lewis and starring Bela Lugosi.

It was an interesting, if unsuccessful, film. The first two minutes are terrific, as Lugosi comes down the stairs, looks at the painting of his dead wife, and then goes to sit at dinner, insisting that the servant serve the empty place where the wife is supposed to sit. This established a very creepy atmosphere, which the rest of the film never lived up to.

Part of the problem was Lugosi. He was in a dual role, that of a nice-guy widower who becomes a raging maniac every three months or so. He had a lot of dialogue that just didn't come out well, lines like "Apple pie? How wonderful!" This was a role that cried out for Boris Karloff (someone very much at home in the language). Also, Lugosi seemed almost feeble here, and I don't think it was acting. (He seemed far healthier in "Black Friday" and "Dark Eyes of London" in 1940 and '39.)

Clarence Muse played the family servant, and he gave the movie much of its charm. Muse would be the wonderful servant in Lubitsch's "Heaven Can Wait" in 1943.

Lewis clearly was using every stylistic trick to pump life into the material, including the "Santa Claus shot" (the camera is in the fireplace, with flames leaping up in front of the lens, to add tension and excitement to a scene of mundane dialogue.)

This Monogram film just showed how much more polished Universal's B films, like "Night Monster," were.

Ah, Mike, INVISIBLE GHOST! I'm no real fan of Bela's Monograms, though -- camp value aside, they're pretty much all schlocky and dull to me. At least IG doesn't have a nosy female reporter, and it's fascinating to see how much of Loretta Young's poise and mannerisms are unnervingly displayed by sister Polly Ann. Agree about Lewis; in fact, I'll be bold enough to state that his direction is practically as airtight as John Ford's in STAGECOACH -- not one shot goes to waste! But that's where the comparison grinds to a halt, lol.

I do like Terry Walker's seductive, petulant, dissatisfied maid, reminiscent of Angela Lansbury as Nancy in GASLIGHT.

The musical "score" is the usual cheesy recycled stuff. I remember it from DEVIL BAT in particular.

Lugosi's eloquent facial expressions unfortunately are less memorable than him shuffling around stiffly in the throes of his altered mental state like the Frankenstein Monster he'd portray in FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN two years later.

From The Bronx came a girl with a style.
Her remarks we enjoyed for a while.
When embarking on leave, she left others to grieve.
Now she's back and we'll all post a smile!

The Creature from the Black Lagoon 1954 Classic

Trailer for this Classic Horror Movie

I'm pretty sure that everyone here saw this movie one time in your life and unfortunately I don't have it on DVD and I always watch it on Turner Classic Movies when I get a chance to do so. I consider this movie one of the all times classics and it's has great suspense, horror, and of course a beautiful damsel in distress in a form of a Julia Adams shown below with the Creature ...

Image

I often wonder if the Director and Producers of this classic monster movie is a fan of Rita Hayworth? ... Because the boat is named RITA in the movie ... see picture below.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of this movie and I love the acting and the sheer drama/horror that came with it.
