RAMONA (1928) Returns! March 29th at Billy Wilder Theater LA

Post by Gagman 66 »

:) Here is a fascinating Podcast interview with motion picture Historians and archivists Hugh Neely and Frank Thompson about the various film versions of the beloved novel RAMONA, by Helen Hunt Jackson, focusing on the brand new LOC Restoration of the long lost RAMONA (1928) with Dolores Del Rio, and Warner Baxter, Directed by Edwin Carewe. Screening for the first time anywhere at UCLA 's Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.on March 29th with Live scoring by Rodney Sauer and Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra. Portions of there new score will be taken from the original 1928 Orchestral score composed by Hugo Risenfeld.

This is the premiere Silent film event of the year so far. A film not seen by the public in at least 84 years! Probably last screened at the end of it's international distribution run in 1930 or '31. Carewe credited with discovering Dolores Del Rio and bringing her to Hollywood in 1925, was a prolific director who's work has all but disappeared. Hopefully the rediscovery of RAMONA will ignite new interest in his movies, as well as the Silent films of Dolores Del Rio. At the time of it's release on March 27th 1928 Del Rio was one of the top 5 female Stars in Hollywood. In addition, RAMONA seems to have been the film that greatly boasted Warner Baxter's career. He went from a moderately popular leading man, to major Star.

In the Podcast, Hugh also talks about how Colleen Moore's HER WILD OAT (1927) was found in the same Czech archive at Prague several years earlier then RAMONA. As well has other long lost Silents that still remain in foreign archival collections. Including a 35 Millimeter print of Mary Pickford's TESS OF THE STORM COUNTRY (1922) as Gosfilmofond in Russia. A picture only previously known to survive in 16 millimeter reduction prints. So a significant find.

This looks like a wonderful event. I hope that some members are able to go (and that TCM eventually airs this restoration).
