Elmer Bernstein for " The Magnificent Seven " wins hands down IMHO.

I always felt the ballad from "Once Upon a Time in the West" (1969) was one of the most beautiful tunes I ever heard:

I don't know if it's "the best," but Morricone's score from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is without question the most iconic.

Whether it's the best or not I'll leave to all of you but my favorite soundtrack is John Barry's "Dances With Wolves." I love the way he writes.

I'm very fond of the score for "Support Your Local Sheriff," which is a not-too-subtle knockoff of the score for "The Magnificent Seven" (a pretty terrific score itself).

I also like the pretty waltz from "From Noon to Three" which, if you've seen the movie, you know takes on a life of its own.

I like the score from The Big Country. The music from the Sergio Leone movies is all that I like about them.

I've been looking for the original soundtrack recording of The Searchers for a long time, I'm so surprised it hasn't been re-issued on cd. However, it's really most effective in the context of the film.

The Magnificent Seven, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Dances with Wolves have all been mentioned.

I would add the score to Lonesome Dove and Quigley Down Under.

There was a wonderful multi album set released years ago on vinyl that had all the great western themes on it.

I wish it was on CD.

I have to let you all know that I have a peculiar fondness for the score of
The Glory Guys.....I loved James Wong Howe's cinematography,
and I loved the Peckinpah script even though it might not have been particularly well-directed..., and I think Slim Pickens had some of its best moments.....
