Thanks for stopping by Countess De Lave!

Ron, we so appreciate your comments here.

Can you tell us about the actors in the photo I posted? I'm afraid I don't know much about their contibutions to the Vitaphone era. Are they featured in a film being screened tomorrow?

This is a still from HAPPY HOTTENTOTS (Vitaphone, 1930). Directed by Bryan Foy of The Seven Little Foys in Warner Bros west coast studios. The short stars Bobby Callahan (l) and huge vaudeville and Broadway star Joe Frisco (r). The comedy short shows the boys trying to break into show business at a theatre at which they are the only act. Hilarious. Frisco was a comedian and great eccentric dancer. His very last film appearance, in a bit, was SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS. His other 1930 short THE SONG PLUGGER, is on volume 2 of Warner Archive's VITAPHONE VARIETIES DVD set. He was in Hollywood in 1930 to star in the now lost feature THE GORILLA.

Had a ball doing this. Programming Director Dennis Millay has been a long time Vitaphone fan for over twenty years, and it was so nice of him to suggest me for this gig. We began the planning this past summer, with me being asked to come up with programming of Vitaphone shorts and features to fill 24 hours! We tweaked it over a few weeks and then Dennis went to work firming up getting the films from his own holdings, Warner Bros, and UCLA.

As to the taping experience, my biggest concern was that I justified TCM's confidence in me. The team down there treated me so well. The morning of the taping, I went out to the front of my hotel to await the car to take me to the studio. I watched as someone walked up to an arriving car and was obviously told it wasn't for him. So I figured it was for me. I went out and confirmed it was indeed my car. I then looked over to see the guy who was turned down. It was Ben Mankiewicz! I introduced myself since we'd be working togetrr that day and suggested we ride to the studio together, which we did. WE had a nice talk on the ride over, and it was immediately obvious Ben had done his Vitaphone homework. He had viewed most of the shorts in advance and discussed in detail his favorites. This was a really great way fr us to get acquainted before we even started shooting!

The shooting of our eleven intros and outro's went smoothly, completed in under 90 minutes. After Ben's scripted openings, we just talked about the upcoming films off the cup. The crew was great and producer Courtney O'Brien watched over me! My friend Alexa Foreman stopped in to say hi during the taping, and afterwards Courtney took me up to see Dennis and Scott McGee, who I worked with for last years Festival. So overall a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience.

I hope you like the finished product. My fingers are crossed!
