I remember being stuck in traffic on the highway in a volkswagen (no AC) in the middle of Kansas on a day when it was 104 degrees. That was bad enough!

When I was little in Oklahoma, we used to pop tar bubbles that would effervesce or ferment or whatever on the road on really hot days for fun. I think you could literally have cooked an egg on the concrete if you really wanted to.

Ha.. been there, done that, (wrote a book about it, made it into a min-series and Heather Locklear played ME) Only it was an '83 Ford Escort instead of a VW. (ha) I loved that little car and just about drove the wheels off it.. but OH me.. every year in the summer I DID so regret not spending the extra money to buy something with A/C. Oh the silly things we do when we are YOUNG.

Good golly I remember those days when I was a kid. The street my Grandma lived on was like that.. and every summer when we'd come to visit we were fascinated with how it would ooze up and get all gooey. ha. We were forever sticking things in it to see if we could get them stuck when it cooled off overnight. ha. (and we were also forever getting in trouble for not checking our shoes and tracking it into her house.)

But Hee hee.. I love the way you describe it. I am trying to get a mental picture of "effervescent" TAR!!! :P

I'm trying to imagine the Oklahoman breakfast delicacy of tar and fried eggs. Strange food you westerners eat.

I'm so glad knitty!

When our heat wave broke, it went down to about that, and I actually felt cold! :D

As for tar and eggs, it sounds ghastly! The boy down the street used to fry ants and crickets with a magnifying glass. ewww! And as for effervescent tar, I couldn't come up with any other name for it... it bubbles up into these large bubbles, and if you poke them just right with a stick they actually make a loud pop. It was so cool! I mean hot....

Kath, can I steal your line
been there, done that, (wrote a book about it, made it into a min-series and Heather Locklear played ME)
It made me snort out loud when I read it.

Heee Hee.. steal away. ha. It has served me well.. ha. so don't mind sharing.

I think I started using it when I got into a "one upmanship" contest with some gals I used to know over a "been there done that" thing we were all gabbing about at work. Ha. I don't even know what we were "bragging" about.. but one gal pulled out the standard "been there done that" and then someone said something like "got the tshirt" and then someone else said "wrote a book about it" and that is when (not to be outdone) I had to chime in with SOMETHING so I pulled out the miniseries/Heather Locklear part.. ha. What can I say.. I just HAD to win. :D

PS Neighbor Nancy.. woo HOO it has been nice, hasn't it.. to see the cooler temsp yesterday and today (so far). I think it is going to heat back up to 100 tomorrow .. but not as bad.. and then maybe a little milder (90's have to be better than 100's... even a little) Let's enjoy it while it lasts.

I try like crazy to keep my little dog off the sidewalk and I'll be damned if she doesn't hop right back on it! I hope she has enough sense to get off if it burns her feet. With dogs, you never know!

I think about that all the time with our new little pooch too, red! The summer has been so hot this year. But she walks so fast, I don't think she ever notices how hot the ground is. I can't even keep up with her, and her legs are about 1/10 the length of mine!

YEEEEE-HAW! We've having RAIN. and it's actually supposed to be a 'severe' thunderstorm, with a watch thru 1am tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for us, that it will really soak the ground... the in ground water meters have a 2 inch ring around them where the ground has pulled away from them. I know this won't solve the problem, but it is a wonderful respite from the scorching heat....

I've got my fingers crossed for you all, and will hope it's a deep soak, not a hard rain that runs off the top...

We are pretty much due east of you guys, neighbor. (other side of the state line) so we got more or less the same. My folks live up north of the river. It looked on tv like they got a better chance of some more rain than we did. But from what they are saying on the news.. there were some issues of strong wind up tonight too. We got some right before the rain.. but nothing too severe (which I think is good because we have a LOT of trees and most are so dry.. I bet some of our branches would snap like twigs if we go TOO much wind. )

Looks like we are going to be a little cooler for at least the next couple of days.. heating back up just about the time the kiddies go back to school. (ha.. great.. keyed up kids.. TOO hot for recess.. that'll make for a fun first week back at work.. alas)

I just keep repeating to myself.. October.. October.. October.. ha.
