Always an interesting gander at J. Gunning's spins, this one prompting a revelatory appreciation of the avant-garde element that the Stooges brought to their eponymous debut that followed the exploding inevitable of Andy Warhol's THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO. (John Cale's viola was present for both.)
Asheton's sonic chords supplanted those of Lou Reed's string work - at least in their cacophony yield.

Don't forget BLUE CHEER also making prescient records like STOOGES or MC5... :)

...and even earlier, the Who, Allhallowsday. Ron Asheton is said to have paid a 1965 visit to England where he saw the proto-punk group play. (It's a good thing he apparently chose to do so then, otherwise he would've had a long wait until the Who's watershed docking in New York in March of 1967 - or sometime even thereafter.)

I agree that THE WHO are the first truly Hardcore band, but early enough to be also "Mod" and "Brit Invasion".
