Nice! I am glad to hear that Bob is still going strong. Husker Du, Sugar... can it really be that long ago?

Depends. Drunk or stoned?

I think the appropriately named Doobies would be better stoned, and Steely Dan would be better drunk.

I prefer The Doobies, I think they play good, interesting music that is unpretentious.

I can't bear most of Steely Dan, but I admit that it's probably because of the pseudo-intellectuals in my school days who thought that listening to Steely Dan meant they were above everyone else. I do like Dirty Works and My Old School. The rest is pretentious rubbish passing as jazz when it's as far from it as can be...at least as far as I am concerned.

Paradox: Despite the "Doobie" name, it's the other way around for me. I blame a fraternity brother (yes...let the catcalls begin) who had a penchant for arriving late on Saturday nights, tanked, and playing Jesus Is Just Alright with his speakers cranked to 11.

I marginally prefer Steely Dan (I also prefer "dilettante" to "pseudo-intellectual", thank you), but most of the Rock 'n' Roll post-Woodstock didn't excite me...until The Ramones rode to the rescue.

Actually, you have a point, neither band would be on my favorites list. I just thought it would be fun to do some battle of the bands. If you feel like it, you can pick two who maybe came up at the same time, and tell me why you like one or the other.

My record store friend says that the Doobies lost all credibility when they appeared on the show What's Happening? :D

But he did turn me on to a REALLY great band from that same early 70's time period, CAN.

CAN is my favorite of those late-'60s/early-'70s experimental German bands,
but I must admit that I heard these others first, then worked backward to CAN.

I'd heard the others, even Neu! which is a bit more obscure, but CAN somehow escaped me. I went through a major Kraftwerk phase but not until long after they had their popularity. I loved the song Autobahn when it came out, though, I was in junior high and just starting to branch out my musical tastes a bit.

Oh my gosh, I've been listening to CAN since day before yesterday when he mentioned them - I can't get enough of them! They sound so timeless. Thank goodness for youtube.

And, then, our favorite chameleon, DAVID BOWIE, gets into the act
(doesn't he always?) with considerable help from BRIAN ENO.
