Mr. A:

I had the pleasure of seeing Christopher Cross in concert in Annapolis this year. He is a wonderful talent. I've always liked his writing style. You are correct in that after nearly 30 years his voice is still as crisp and clear as ever.

I got to meet him after the show for a minute. He is (or at least seemed) a very nice man. We talked for a minute about playing and writing. I enjoyed the show a great deal.

MM57,

Yes, he's a wonderful writer and musician. I wish I had a voice like that--incredible! I also love the production on his first album which has become one of my benchmarks to mix songs to. Everything on that record is incredibly fat and thick, but has an amazing high end sheen and clarity. It's one of the reasons I'm still using tape, not digital.

Here's a peppy little ditty from our pal, the late great Bobby Darin. It's a tune written by the also late great Steve Allen. It's called "This Could Be The Start of Something Big."

I haven't gone through all of these hip, hep, and cool pages, so if these faves are repeats...well, just listen again.

Wow, welcome to the Record Party, ChiO!! Hope to see you around here more often. Especially if you're gonna bring those hipster pals of yours.

Here's the man himself, Bo Diddley, doing his signature tune:

And to close my listening day, my three favorite, make-the-hairs-on-the-back-of-my-neck-stand-up, soul performances:

"Tonight we'll meet/At the Dark End of the Street" -- James Carr

And its deconstruction by Clarence Carter -- "Cows like to make love."

Hope you guys had a great one. I had a couple of clips, but I didn't know if they might be too "out there" for a birthday.

On January 10, 1976, a fixture in Chicago's music scene and a music giant died. If Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil, then this cat must have eaten the Devil for a snack.
