Dewey, Spinmaster General, My Friend;

Need your help to lift my sodden spirits; I've been trying to brighten up for 2 days, you know, push those clouds away from my heavy heart, and, on my own, am failing.
While focused on my last son getting hitched by Summer's End, and all my new grandkids poppin' up like pansies in an onion patch, I got word this Sunday past that my sister's 20-yr-old grandson had just died in a swimming accident.
His wake is tomorrow night, and my chest shudders, when I think of it.
My Dad always claimed there was no greater tragedy for any human being than to bury a child (as he himself had).
Now that I'm the patriarch of my own burgeoning clan, I could not agree with him more . . yet now, I must be the pillar of strength for my sister & my niece, who are enduring the unimagineable.
Dewey, didn't Seals & Croft have a tune about not passing this way again? Could you maybe run that one for this very old-feeling Sled Dog tonight?
Many thanks for your ear, mi hermano.

Howdy Klondike - Everyone here at the Record Party hopes that
this musical interlude will help bring you the peace of mind to heal
your achin' heart in this understandably impossible time. We'll all be

How blessed I am to have my friends here at the Silver Screen Oasis.
How grateful I feel to have had a few quiet tears before my morning coffee.
In so many more ways than I'll ever find words to express, thank you all.
I'll be back next week, stronger & wiser.
Til then, drive it like ya stole it, and laugh like you're skippin' school!

Dear Klondike. Sorry about your loss. I wish there was something I could do or say to help you the way your post has helped me. It has reminded me to thank God for my own wonderful children. God has been good to me, and I’m not sure I always deserved it.

I hope these three videos will help raise your spirits a little.

YouTube is a nostalgia goldmine. As we all know.

I hope you don’t mind me going off on a sidetrack.

There are some very gifted amateurs posting on YouTube. Here are some that I found completely by accident.

A stirring acapella arrangement of ‘Polly On The Shore’ by the Belgian group Speechless

Keni Lee Burgess with a very nice version of ‘Plastic Jesus’ played on slide banjo (when was the last time you saw anyone play a slide banjo ?).

And last but not least, the amazing 9 year old Sam Scott with a wonderful version of the old jazz standard ‘Exactly Like You

Doo Wop. Some of my very earliest childhood memories of summer involve my being in my bed with the window open, and hearing the boys on the corner harmonizing. Bee-yootiful.

"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is based on a song from South Africa known as "Mbube Wimoweh." The song was first recorded in SA in the 1940s. That recording was heard by folk singer Pete Seeger (whose family was involved in the preservation of international folk music). He performed it often in the 1940s and 50s with his folk group, The Weavers:

Here is a more authentic version done by the South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
