Judith:

Thanks for the info on "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." I always hated the two most popular versions but thought the South African title being sung in the background was typical doo-wop gibberish. That doesn't make the song any better but it sure explains a lot.

BRIAN ENO has his detractors...but I'm not one of them. From 1974:

A change of pace -- today, June 12, is the birthday of one of America's great and generally underrated balladeers, he of the throbbing baritone, an Italian boy from Brooklyn named Vito Farinola, a/k/a Vic Damone:

Okay, you are all in for a treat. Over in the Desert Island Discs thread I listed as one of my must have albums the debut on Columbia Records from The Laughing Dogs. They were the opening act for the first concert I ever saw, and youtube just happens to have a clip from that actual show! Enjoy!

And an encore.

Now the headliner.

And their encore.

We never forget our first time, do we? November 1966. Here are
the three most memorable songs played by each band at that concert,
first from the opening band, then the headliner. (Unfortunately, none
of the bands’ members were quite as striking as Debbie Harry.)

The ASSOCIATION “Along Comes Mary”

The ASSOCIATION “Cherish”

The ASSOCIATION “Requiem for the Masses”

The LOVIN’ SPOONFUL “Do You Believe in Magic”

The first rock’n’roll song that my Dad admitted to liking, The LOVIN’
SPOONFUL
“Rain On the Roof”

The LOVIN’ SPOONFUL “Summer in the City”

Uncle Dewey, tell us about when your first time. Was Jelly Roll Morton really the inventor of Jazz?

Uncle Dewey’s first foray into concert going was also probably his
best. October, 1965. Detroit’s Cobo Hall. BOB DYLAN. Lots of
tunes from “Highway 61 Revisited” and some amped-up versions of
earlier stuff. “Highway 61 Revisited”

As I recall it we arrived a little late so I’m not sure if there even
was an opening act. The music was loud and raucous and
fantastic and didn't sound very much like the records which made
some people cranky. “Ballad of a Thin Man”

An overwhelming presence of marijuana smoke and not too much
protesting of his “new sound.” “Like A Rolling Stone”

We finished the night at International House of Pancakes.
An extraordinarily groovy time was had by all. “Tombstone Blues”

ps: I believe the true inventor of jazz was actually "Kaiser Roll" Morgenstern,
only he called it something else.

For Tim Russert, one of the most insightful and least pretentious newsmen out there.
