One of the best concerts I ever saw was Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive Tour. As no one has posted Joe's video, I thought I'd grab the original from ol' Cab Calloway. After all, that's what Joe wanted us to do...

Say now, welcome aboard DJ Bryce --- the gang here has been
looking forward to your arrival and your initial set was indeed a
pungent dip into the deep end of the pool. Don’t be a stranger at
the Record Party! Here comes Brother Ray Charles for the late
night crowd…

On this, my 21-st wedding anniversary, while my wife is away on business...in Japan, I’d like to play a few songs I put on the “mix-tape” I made my for my bride-to-be.

Naturally a great place to start.
Rockpile--I Knew The Bride (When She Used to Rock ‘n Roll)

Since my bride-to-be didn’t really know rock ‘n roll (she was into classical music--I’ve since corrupted her) the only band she knew was Chicago.
Ballet For a girl in Buchannon (aka: Make Me Smile)

Squeeze--Take Me I’m Yours

A great slow-dance song. Spandau Ballet:--True

As my wife was a number of years older then me (I've since caught up), I thought it’d be humorous to slip this one in, figuring she wouldn’t get the reference. She did....

Shoot, what James Brown does, I’ve been doing.
-- Ira Tucker (May 17, 1925 – June 24, 2008)

Music lost one its most powerful and inspiring voices on Tuesday.
Ira Tucker was one of the last direct connections to the Golden
Age of Gospel. Joining The DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS in 1938
at the age of 13, and being on their first recording in 1939, he was one
of the first Gospel singers to leap off the stage and take the music into
the aisles. Without him, would we have had Jackie Wilson,
James Brown, Wilson Pickett and a host of other Soul
Men? There is a reason that it’s called Soul. Amen.

“Standing By the Bedside of a Neighbor” (early ‘60s)

“Jesus Is Coming Soon” (1983)

The DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS hit the Pop Charts singing backup
on “Loves Me Like a Rock”. Ira Tucker steals this rendition from
those youngsters, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. (Listen
through Wonder’s flub; that’s when it really gets hot.)

I guess we feel are experiencing so many losses now because people are living so much longer and are more set in our consciouness. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm having another of my auditory spells, and this is what's been turning in the windmills of my mind all day:

The Rocky Fellers - Killer Joe

Mickey & Sylvia - Love Is Strange (do you find these two melodies similar?)

Say, do you y'all know about Killer Joe? Killer Joe Piro, that is.

He was a national jitterbug champion and well-known dance instructor, and he was all over the New York discos in the 60s and 70s, and all over TV, too, demonstrating the latest dances. (Yes, and he was rather short, but boy, could he dance.)

I just found a studio cut of Last Chance Texaco. Rickie Lee's phrasing and vocal are so incredible on this, I remember transcribing all her vocals to guitar to try and learn more about dynamics and timing. A great song that never got its due as far as FM radio:
