Thanks for the wake-up. And WoW thank you so much for the link to "Girl Don't Come" by Sandie Shaw. I haven't heard that in ages and ages. Such an unpretentious record, and though I still can't discipher some of the lyrics, I've always loved that poppy gem from that golden age of poppy melodies ...

Edith Piaf's "Sophie' sounds eerily similar to "Lawd You Made The Night Too Long" ... Some melody borrowing there methinks ... In the verse anyway ...

"Potato Salad" is an interesting eyefull ... I can't believe human beings can bend that way ... Ouch ...

youtube rocks ...

Hey precoder, thanks for stopping by Dewey's Record Party! It's always nice to hear a comment or two about what goes on here. And PLEASE, PLEASE feel free to contribute your own selections (that goes for everyone!) to the mix. Simply type at the end of it (don't forget the backslash), copy and then paste it into the message body! We'd love to hear from everybody: variety is the main ingredient on THIS spice rack! - Dewey

This song began life in 1936 as "The Weed Smoker's Dream" by the remarkable and underappreciated band known as the Harlem Hamfats. Their original disc released on Decca's 'race' series, was subtitled "Why Don't You Do Now" and within a few years composer Joe McCoy refined the tune into this ... Peggy later admitted she played the Lil Green blues version over and over again in her dressing room which was adjacent to Benny's. Finally he said "You must love that song Peggy". It's entirely unfair to accuse Miss Lee of simply covering Lil Green, because the result Lee and Goodman achieved was four times the tempo of the Hamfats or Green versions. Lee employs afro-american stylings a la Billie Holliday ~ Ethel Waters ...

This was the last side Goodman/Lee would cut before the dreaded AFM ban and yet it helps define the career path for the young vocalist ...

Peggy Lee with the Benny Goodman Orchestra 1942: "Why Don't You Do Right" Columbia Records peaked at #4 ...
