Brooks, Dietrich and Harlow

It's funny how the names of Louise Brooks, Marlene Dietrich and Jean Harlow are linked.

First Brooks leaves Hollywood for Germany to play the part of Lulu in Pandora's Box, for which local girl Dietrich was also considered. Brooks causes a sensation, but is more or less snubbed by Hollywood, whereas Dietrich now in the States, is a huge star and remains so for the rest of her days. Brooks however, get's offered the role of Gwen in the early talking gangster movie Public Enemy with James Cagney, but apparently showing indifference turns it down. As a result Jean Harlow fresh from her success in Hells Angels, gets the role and for the rest of her brief life was a big star, while Brooks hit upon hard times, at least for a while
