Thanks, feaito! She is still so energetic at 87. She uses a walker, but is so lively, and shared several stories with me about her life, filming Giant, her good friend Diana Lynn, her family, and her faith in God. Jane Withers was so happy to introduce Giant at the festival and it was fabulous on the big screen. As I am a native Houstonian, my parents and I were well acquainted with the antics of wildcatter Glenn McCarthy, the inspiration for Jett Rink.
I also met Lynn's sweet friend Mary Mallory when we were all in Club TCM. Hope you enjoyed her article Lynn posted.

Thanks Sue Sue for jarring my memory ... I just loved the way she shared her thoughts about the movie and her enduring enthusiasm (about the movie Giant) and I am so happy that you were able to get a chance to talk to her. What a terrific lady she is! So bubbly at the age of 87.Sue Sue Applegate wrote:Thanks, feaito! She is still so energetic at 87. Christy, your recollections are priceless. You left me wanting more.
Did you get to see Karen Sharpe? She was a crush. The photo of the wonderful Jane Withers is great.
Keep up the good work.

Hi,
Love the photos and the reporting of the Festival, Christy....
It's great to see Jane Withers and I hope she is well and can attend many more outings like this.
Love the picture of you and Lynn. She is the only one of our little family here whom I have met - so far... But, fair warning - I intend to attend next years event - I will meet you all!!!!
You both look great and glamourous....
Larry

A DASH OF NOIR....
Thank you, Larry! We will have a special celebration for you! Next year is the fifth festival and TCM's 20th anniversary. We can't wait to see you!
And Joe, I didn't see Karen Sharpe. Sorry!
As I was walking by the lengthy reflection pool at the Vanity Fair party, a man standing in the shadows spoke softly to me.
"Hey, sweetheart, what's the rush? Don't ya have time for a smoke? Cigarette? A little Tiparillo?'" he sniped.
"Well, I was looking for a tall, cool drink by the bar," I said.
"There all outta milk, honey," he said.
"I was lookin' for something a little stronger," I said.
He laughed like he'd heard that more than once before.
"I'm out of 'Frisco. Where do you hail from, sister?" he asked with an aire of assurance.
Then he told me his name was Johnny Stokes, just the kind of guy you'd expect to be packin' some heat. He just came from Bay Meadows and the horses were runnin' a little slow, like San Quentin quail. But he didn't let that bother him. No, sir. Not him. He was just minding his own business...

Re: Sue Sue's TCM Film Festival Tidbit Travel Blog
Woo hoo! Just had to drop in here and say that I'm really enjoying your latest posts here, Miss Applegate.. I do love a good first hand account from someone who got to walk alongside so many of the names and faces that we get to enjoy on TCM (stars and hosts alike) Oh.. and fun story about your new friend Johnny too, ha.
And thanks too, to Ms Cutter.. that was a fine piece by your friend Ms. Mallory.. a very good read. I appreciate you posting it.
I doubt my limited budget is ever going to get me anywhere near a TCM event like this (ha.. unless they decide that everything really IS up to date in Kansas City and end up coming out here to our neck of the woods for a change, ha. I know, I know... dream on, Kathy!) But at any rate.. the next best thing to THAT is getting to see the pics and hear the stories from you folks who were there! Thanks for letting me in on the action.. even if only just to read about all the fun.. that to me is still a good time!

Your friend Johnny's a baby faced good looker...I wonder if he's somewhat familiar here already? maybe you can lure him over here to the SSO with the promise of a drink and a little action on the side.
Gosh, I like a guy who can dress well and accessorize.

Me, too, Jackie!
Rohanaka, my heartiest thanks for your sweet comments.
Great image, Joe. What a detective!
Just rewatching part of Funny Girl, and I was stunned at the fabulous colors, especially in the roller-skating number.
And this photo doesn't really do justice to this ensemble she's sporting in the "People" number, but it comes close...

I love the roller skate number, Christy! It's my favorite part of the movie! And I agree, her clothes in the movie are fabulous! I love the People dress, but my favorite of her outfits is the one where she sees Nicky at the train station. Mushroom brown hobble skirt with sailor jacket, and a perfect Portobello hat to match, with gills made out of silk on the underside near the face.

I CONFESS...
Jackie,
I loved all those stunning outfits in Funny Girl. That outfit she wears at the train station is beautiful.
Well, Johnny Stokes did have an interesting line, and he was just minding his own business, but it seems part of that business is his friendship with Film Noir Foundation President and Founder Eddie Muller, both of whom are seen in the following photo enjoying some libations at the lovely Vanity Fair party...
So Johnny Stokes really isn't as dangerous as he seems. He's actually a good pal of Eddie Muller, who is terribly popular at the Turner Classic Film Festival. This year Muller introduced The Narrow Margin with special guest, Houstonian Jacqueline White, one of the stars of The Narrow Margin. Muller also hosted the screening of It Always Rains on Sunday, the British "kitchen sink" drama that heralded the British New Wave Cinema, and Muller also welcomed Beau Bridges to chat about his father Lloyd Bridges in Try and Get Me.
And Jackie, forgive me for not getting Beau Bridge's autograph. Try and Get Me screened the same time as Ann Blyth's introduction to Mildred Pierce.
And I didn't want to miss that. But as I walked into the Gala screening of Funny Girl in the lobby of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the first person I met was Ann Blyth....
