Vera Cruz

Post by vallo »

The film is on TCM Saturday 10/20 @ 12:30pm
This is one of my favorite Westerns
It stars Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster

Plot:After the American Civil War, mercenaries travel to Mexico to fight in their revolution for money. The former soldier and gentleman Benjamin Trane meets the gunman and killer Joe Erin and his men, and together they are hired by the Emperor Maximillian and the Marquis Henri de Labordere to escort the Countess Marie Duvarre to the harbor of Vera Cruz.

Any one else like this film? The dialog is great, the Mexican Scenery, with a great cast of co-stars, Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine,Cesar Romero,Denise Darcel and Jack Elam. try not to miss it. you will be entertained.

Yes, my friend, yes, I am in complete agreement with all of your assessments . .
But I have a confession -
Despite all the other sterling selling-points of this wonderfully well-paced post-Civil War adventure, I always thinks of the same two things first, when I hear the title Vera Cruz, both of them due to Senor Lancaster:

1) That cunning little behind-the-back stunt draw he used to dispatch the would-be usurper in his gang, while they wait for the Maximillianos, and . . .

2) His persistent reference to Cesar Romero's "crocodile smile".

Yup, that's me . . . 52, going-on 11!

Those are two great scenes. I will also add the scene when Ben (Cooper) is telling the story of his lost Tin Soldier and Joe (Lancaster) is eating a piece of Turkey?? and drinking wine, like a pig.

Capt. Danette: [sarcastically, after watching Joe drink] Careful. Some of the wine is getting in your mouth.

I find it very entertaining, although a little too violent for my tastes. I think Burt's over-the-top characterization is pretty funny, as are Coop's bemused reactions.
