Re: *CANDIDS*
If I may make an interesting comment about the wonderful Mr. Preston. He and pal Bill Holden were signed by Paramount at about the same time as part of the studio's "Golden Circle". While Holden, of course, achieved a moderate (if not exactly boffo success) success as "Golden Boy," the films in which he appeared afterward were mainly a meager lot. Preston, on the other hand, slam-banged in such studio spectaculars as "Union Pacific," "Northwest Mounted Police," "Reap the Wild Wind" and "Wake Island" - not to cast aside his role as the detective boyfriend of my honey Veronica Lake in "This Gun for Hire."
Yet despite these impressive "debut" credits Preston never quite achieved the cinematic success of Holden. Some people have claimed that Preston, although a competent player, simply didn't possess the strong actor quality of Holden (which of course would eventually be displayed by Holden, thanks primarily to Billy Wilder), yet back in '38 Paramount certainly must have felt differently, affording Preston those parts in A-pictures while Holden had to make due in such forgettable fare as "Those Were the Days," "The Remarkable Andrew," "The Fleet's In" and "Meet the Stewarts."
Merely an observation.

Somehow the words "Clifton Webb" and "popsicle" don't seem to go together.
On the other hand, shouldn't Roddy be eating a banana?

Re: *CANDIDS*
All I can say, Joe, is that Fred MacMurray and Hal Wallis were lucky men. Both of those gals bring a sigh to me.
RIP Miss. Hyer.
