I wrote a lengthy reply to Dargo about long songs.
I wasn't logged in for some reason and it all went away.
Anyway, the gist is, long songs typically gum up the continuity of a well groomed radio station.
I believe Jazz and Classical are examples of lengthy songs being the norm.
Herb Alpert's Rise is a fine song in the full length version. (7:37)
Chuck Mangione's Feels So Good has a nasty edit for the short version. (9:43) LP version.
American Pie by Don McLean was released with the song split into both sides of the 45 single. Over 8 minutes.
Feleena by Marty Robbins probably never played on the radio. There was not short version. Also over 8 minutes.
I first heard it on XM radio before Sirius took over.
I'm a fan of music from WWII. Them smash shellacs had to be short.
I believe this little ditty was recorded on 2 78 RPM records (4 sides).

If I recall correctly, the first time I ever listened to the above recording was at a high school classmate's home circa the late-'60s. And, the second time was sometime during the early-'70s while listening to the Sunday night Dr. Demento program which was broadcast at the time by the now long lamented Los Angeles underground/progressive/alternate rock radio station KMET...
