The Last Picture Show and 1971 Supporting Actor/Actress Award

I was fine with Cloris' win. Ben Johnson was good, but I've forgotten who else was up that year. I felt Bridges was more of a lead role. I'd have nominated Bottoms over him, but then I figure he was pitched as lead actor? (Bottoms). The film was more of an ensemble piece. Don't remember who they campaigned for in each category. (but voters don't always nominate according to that). I would not have nominated Cybil in any category!

I probably would have voted for Frey, he seemed to have the showiest part and he was very memorable singing "Miracle Of Miracles"

Tough call between Cloris Leachman and Ellen Burstyn, but if forced to chose only one I would probably go with Cloris Leachman.

CHLORIS had the showiest part in that film, she is awesome. ELLEN BURSTYN had the most interesting part and is wonderful as always. I am growing to like THE LAST PICTURE SHOW better after multiple views, including last week. CYBIL is perfect for her part, though the least impressive in a strong cast.

Ellen Burstyn has that very poignant scene with Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) where she reveals that she loved and was loved by Sam the Lion. In that scene Sonny (and the audience) learns that Ellen Burstyn's character (Lois) was the one that Sam used to take swimming.
“I’ll tell you, Sonny, it’s terrible you only meet one man in your whole life who knows what you’re worth. Just terrible.”

She also has that great moment near the end of the scene where we can tell she's contemplating "getting intimate" with Sonny but decides against it:
“No, I’ll just go on home.”

True, but it's not a showy scene like Cloris' kitchen blow up.
