I'm watching The Broadway Melody right now on TCM, and I am struck by how effeminate the (male) costume designer. Just how long would it take for Hollywood to have characters so openly (or so crassly) gay?

With all the smoking done on and off set it's a wonder they could keep the film and cameras clean and uncontaminated.
