I would say if you judged who was the best director on versatilty, you'd be hard pushed to see passed Michael Curtiz. i wish i could say he was a nice guy, but from what i can gather he was a bit of a tyrant.

Hi Stuart! I love Michael Curtiz' movies and he's definitely in what I might describe as my "second tier" of great directors. He could do it all! For auteurists who are too strict, I think they find this limits him but I say the opposite. It shows how truly talented he was. His powers were waining during his final film, The Comancheros, but boy, you'd never know it.
I love his movies for Flynn, especially Captain Blood.

I'm shocked -- shocked, I say, that one from the U.K. and one from Dreamland did not mention a little movie with a Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Vincent Price and Olivia de Haviland called THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH & ESSEX -- a nice historical costume romance drama.
