Ooh, little Chico, mi amigo, all of us here at the Record Party wish
you a speedy return to the old homestead. When I told Charley the
cat about it, all he said was “Meeowch!” In meantime, here come a
bunch of well-wishers…

The Chicago Tribune reported today that Chicago-born composer and
arranger EARLE HAGEN has died at 88. He composed several
instantly recognizable tunes, especially television show theme songs.
His first TV theme was his arrangement of “Londonderry Air” that was
used as the theme for Make Room for Daddy and forging a long
professional relationship with Sheldon Leonard. Here are some
other EARLE HAGEN standards.

That Girl

The Mod Squad (too hip for words – I love you, Peggy)

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

His first major composition, Harlem Nocturne (performed by
The RAY ANTHONY ORCHESTRA)

P.S. Chico thanks Charlie & Dewey for the well-wishes, and I thank Mr. Ark for "Take a Chance," one of my all-time faves.

Sorry to hear about the great Earle Hagen, someone so important to television as we know it. Here's one of his signature tunes, an obscure one, but one that I've remembered all these years.

Big time thanks for the phenomenal tribute to Mr. Hagen! Amazing that
one man had such a profound impact on the collective consciousness
of an entire generation!
I believe he also had something to do with this little ditty...

The Chicago Tribune reported today that JIMMY McGRIFF died
on Saturday at 72. He was diagnosed with MS several years ago. In the
‘60s, he was one of the Hammond B-3 organ players to capture my ears.
Jimmy Smith is the jazz king on the organ, but when it comes to blues,
I can do things where he can’t touch me.
Swing those Blues for the
angels, Mr. McGRIFF.

Good morning Record Party birdbaths, time to arise and swing
as we celebrate the birthday of none other than BENNY GOODMAN,
born this day ninety nine years ago in the great city of Chicago!
“Sing Sing Sing” from the 1937 movie “Hollywood Hotel”

“Roll ‘em!” (1942) from the movie “The Powers Girl”

“Minnie’s in the Money” (1943) from the movie “The Gang’s All Here”

“All The Cats Join In” (1946) courtesy of Walt Disney!

with Lionel Hampton (and Danny Kaye) “Stealing Apples” from the
1948 movie “A Song Is Born”

Benny joined by the great Red Norvo (1960)

And speaking of the great Red Norvo, the gang here at the
Record Party reminds all you cats and kittens that Red will
be appearing in the 1958 twisto-noir THE SCREAMING MIMI
this Saturday night on TCM, 7:00 pm (PST); 10:00 pm (EST)

Ya done did dood it again, DJ Dewey. I picked up the clarinet to follow
in my Father’s footsteps, and it was his love for BENNY GOODMAN
that set the standard. And guess who celebrated his 83rd birthday yesterday
– my Dad. So, thank you for the King of Swing sides, and here are some
more licorice stick favorites.

JOHNNY DODDS in Louis Armstrong & His Hot Seven
“Potato Head Blues”

The BUSTER BAILEY Orchestra (same band as The John
Kirby Sextet
) “Am I Blue”

BARNEY BIGARD goes down to Duke’s Place with members
of Duke Ellington and His Orchestra “C Jam Blues”

ARTIE SHAW & His Orchestra “Lady Be Good” (his birthday
was May 23)

WOODY HERMAN & His Herd “After You’ve Gone”

After being relegated effectively to New Orleans-Chicago style small
groups and big bands by the Bebop revolution, the clarinet is making
a comeback in free & avant-garde jazz circles such as KEN
VANDERMARK & Pandelis Karayorgis
“Lifgatowy”

Emotive singers

Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops. Fabulous singer. Always 110 %. A long string of great songs. This is one of my personal favorites.

Four Tops - I'll Turn To Stone.

Chairmen Of The Board. General Johnson, another stunning voice. The Pavarotti of soul.

Chairmen Of The Board - Give Me Just A Little More Time.

Clarence Carter - Patches.. A genuine tearjerker.

Brook Benton. What a beautiful voice. I wish I could sing like this.

Dinah Washington - September In The Rain. I love this song, syrupy strings and all. No other reason for posting it.

Another great, soulful voice: Miss Sarah Vaughan. Seems that
in 1960 she released an LP of Henry Manicini's best tunes and on it was
a great vocal version of the PETER GUNN THEME.
Here's a whacked recent remix that was featured several years
ago on the Verve Re-Mixed CD:

Now here's the original 1960 version; unfortunately, the video on
YouTube doesn't permit embedding, so here's the link...

A major tip o' the Record Party Kerward Derby to our
friend Klondike for steering us to this great piece of music!

Spring seems to have finally hit Chicago and, along with our incredible
Cubs, we have these precious Doo-Wop flowers in bloom.

The CARNATIONS “Long Tall Girl”

The original version: The GLADIOLAS “Little Darlin’”

ANDY ROSE “You Weren’t There”

One could say this isn’t Doo-Wop, but it is a performance too stunning
not to pick:
