You're exactly right, Mongo.
Forgive my lapse of manners; I guess peeking around behind all these glam tinseltown lives had me reacting superficially. [Just don't ell my Mom, 'kay? I got my ears pulled enough when I was a kid!]

Your new thread is quite a trip through the decades of classic Hollywood, Mongo. I'm enjoying the ride a great deal, (though, perhaps I could have lived out my span without seeing Marlon Brando in a diaper...).

My three favorite photos so far are the two with Ava Gardner entertaining two of her (ahem) gentlemen friends, Sinatra and Robert Taylor (by the looks of things practically on the same day). I lent my copy of Lee Server's biography, "Ava:Love Is Nothing" to my brother, (I can kiss that book goodbye), so maybe you can fill my memory in about how these two fellas dovetailed in that beauty's life. All I can remember is that Barbara Stanwyck would have gladly let the air out of Ava's tires had she had the chance following Gardner's affair with her then-husband, Taylor. Did those two guys know about each other, or was what was good for the goose, just as good for the gander? Btw, the not-on-dvd, seldom broadcast noir, The Bribe (1949) will be steaming up TCM this week on Aug. 21st at 9:00AM and on Nov. 24th at 12:15AM (something to be thankful for around the holiday, eh?)...My other, truly favorite photo so far is the one of Stan Laurel and his little girl Lois. Could there ever have been a sweeter looking father?

Thanks for putting this compendium together, Mongo. You are wonderful.

Mongo:

I like these candids so much better than the studio poses. I'm afraid I'm with moira on Marlon, but also with Bela in his real, as opposed to reel coffin.

Avaavaavaava . . 'va . . 'va
I'd be more eloquent, but my glands keep unplugging my tongue!
Mongo, good Sir, are you trying to sabotage my wits? First, a quick glimpse of Brenda Marshall, then the merest soupcon of Rita, and now a hefty double shot of the lovliest filly ever to prance the pastures of Hollywood Heaven?!!
You know what those two candids of l'Ava Jolie brought to mind for me, just now? That deMaupassant quote about how someone you dislike will annoy the living h*ll out of you just by the way they hold their fork, yet some one you adore can dump their whole plate in your lap and you just won't care.
That kind of sums up how I feel about AG: never a great actress, not always a loyal friend, seldom a warm humanitarian, likely not a noteworthy intellectual or aesthetic, too often a self-absorbed wanton . . but by combining that stunning face with a chipper personality and a bon vivant attitude, her merry little balloon just goes drifting sweetly along forever beneath that canopy of greater Stars!

Never ceases to amaze me, Klonny: I simply don't get all the rapture about Ava Gardner. I think the photo above is ghastly -- the only adjective I can ever come up with for Gardner's face is "odd," and not necessarily in a good way. We all surely see different things in the same image, don't we?

Judith, my friend, I suspect that you may be in the minority regarding Ava Gardner. It may seem an odd face, but a beautiful one, despite all, and to me, a better actress than she knew as she aged, not always so gracefully.

Speaking of faces: I'm having a hard time which makes the better pair of faces -- William Claude & Julius, or Sal & Paul. Beauty lurks everywhere.

Great point, Big C: especially that exchange of looks between Fields & Marx - truly a treasure!

And speaking of expression . . hey, Mongo, can you ID that comely young thing behind Ginger who was endeavoring to give such great face at Joan's wedding bash?

Klondike, the lovely actress is Sally Blane, the sister of Loretta Young. The guy leaning on the bar is actor Russell Gleason, the son of the wonderful James Gleason. The photo was taken c1938.
And I happen to think that Ava Gardner is a ravishing beauty.

Much thanks to you Moira, and I'm glad to hear that your enjoying the thread. Strangely enough I had no idea that Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner were an item. That rat canoodled around on my Barbara Stanwyck?

Anne, as promised the CANDIDS are a variety of images both bitter and sweet. Not all was peaches and cream in LALA land.

If I may, Mongo, the photo was taken October 11, 1935, the day Joan married Franchot Tone.

More great stuff. The Brando one is beyond depressing.

I love the one of Dietrich and Colbert, very cute.

Oh, and it is Farley Granger, not "Farey".

I think it's safe to say that we all know that it's farley, not farey (and subconciously corrected it while reading), but most of us like to practice stockpiling forgiveness when it comes to typo's.
Sort of choosing to ignore the color of everyone's pots & kettles, as it were.
