Yes, very Carlin-like. Like a heavier, less drug-laden, Country George Carlin.

One of the greatest voices was stilled yesterday. One of life’s great
mysteries is how a voice of gut-wrenching tortured love could bring
such joy and a smile beside the tears. Rest in peace, LEVI STUBBS.
We miss you already.

ChiO's news of the passing of Levi Stubbs is indeed a very, very sad
thing. My own Motor City roots are saturated with the beauty and the
purity of his soulful voice. There will never be another like him. The
flag is at half-mast today at the Record Party.
BILLY BRAGG "Levi Stubbs' Tears"

With the money from her accident
She bought herself a mobile home
So at least she could get some enjoyment
Out of being alone
No one could say that she was left up on the shelf
Its you and me against the world kid she mumbled to herself
Chorus:
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi stubbs tears run down his face
She ran away from home with her mothers best coat
She was married before she was even entitled to vote
And her husband was one of those blokes
The sort that only laughs at his own jokes
The sort that war takes away
And when there wasnt a war he left her anyway
Norman whitfield and barratt strong
Are here to make everything right thats wrong
Holland and holland and lamont dozier too
Are here to make it all okay with you
One dark night he came home from the sea
And put a hole in her body where no hole should be
It hurt her more to see him walking out the door
And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the Floor
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
She takes off the four tops tape and puts it back in its case
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi stubbs tears...

Thanks for the Levi Stubbs tributes, thanks for "Levi Stubbs' Tears"
Dewey, really touching. I'm missing him already, and this morning
I'm missing my dad too. More and more videos of him keep popping
up on Youtube, including this one, which I came across yesterday.

I'm posting it because it features some pretty cool music!
(Andre Williams' 'Agile, Mobile, Hostile' )

(for some irritating reason the video seems to only play - without constantly
pausing - when it's set on "high quality" ... but this may be some
problem with my connection!)

And I need you more than want you/And I want you for all time

On Friday night in a small bar, MrsChiO, I and about 80 others listened
to the composer of that beautiful lyric, JIMMY WEBB, sing that and
several others in between stories of Glen Campbell confusing him with
John Hartford (Why don’t you write me another one like “Gentle
on My Mind”?) and drinking binges with his best friend and favorite
composer, Harry Nilsson (What is “Put the lime in the coconut” suppose
to mean?
). Here are a few of those between-stories songs.

There’s another voice in the Heavenly Soul Choir now. DEE DEE

the greatest soul ballads)

It was indeed sad news about Levi Stubbs - he was so ill for so long, too.
But I think one of his greatest performances has so far been left out:

Audrey II in "Little Shop of Horrors" (what a treat - Levi and Rick Moranis in the same movie!)
