Watching Lyle Talbot last night reminded me of Ed Wood, Jr.,
who reminded me of DOLORES FULLER, native of South Bend,
Indiana and the writer (or co-writer) of some catchy tunes through the years.
So this morning, The Record Party salutes the songwriting talent of
the star of GLEN OR GLENDA, JAILBAIT, BRIDE OF THE MONSTER and PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.

More Shelley Fabares! Does the younger set know her last name is pronounced "Fabray," and that she is the niece of Nanette Fabray? And do we have to explain who Nanette Fabray is? How about Shelley's turn as the sexy and witchy next door neighbor on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman? Every bit as good as Susan Lucci. Oh well.

Anyway - Shelley did my all-time favorite pre-teen song (I mean, when I was a pre-teen).

Johnny Angel (sigh)

This pre-teen boy loved Mary Stone, but eventually outgrew The Donna Reed Show. Imagine my joy when years later I could spend one night a week with Christine Armstrong on Coach.

I WANT A BRAVE MAN I WANT A CAVE MAN ...

I haven't heard Johnny Angel in AGES - thanks! ... it reminded
me of another pre-teen "Johhny" song: Johnny Get Angry performed
by Joanie Sommers in 1962 ... what a WEIRD song ... on oh
so many levels ...including an instrumental break featuring
a kazoo chorus ... what was that about?

Oooh - suburban white girl rock. Cool. Here's the Princess of same, the Sweetie Pie From Tenafly

Lesley Gore - "It's My Party" (I just love songs that have my name in them!)

Here I am again in Lesley's song "Judy's Turn to Cry" Sounds like she's singing live, and dig those Mondrian dresses!

TALKIN 'BOUT MY (PEPSI) GENERATION

Post by mookryan »

I feel like I've fallen into an early 60's time warp!

Here's Joanie Sommers again, giving voice
to The Pepsi Generation

These songbirds were, without a doubt, the absolute queens of the 7th
grade make-out sessions…

Here's one -- everyone jumped on the bandwagon in the early 60s, including Patty Duke's managers, who put her into a recording contract.

And here's the girl singer against whom all other 60s girl singers of this type should be measured -- the greatest (eat your heart out, Nancy Sinatra!)

Annette Funicello - "California Sun" (and I hope she's feeling OK)

Here's one from way back in 1960. I didn't own a lot of singles then, but I had this one
"O Dio Mio"

Oh, boy - we flipped out when we saw this one in 1962 - our beloved Annette in an Italian restaurant! Could it get any better?

I was just about to post "I've Told Every Little Star"
and then realized that Dewey already beat me to it!
Bummer, man!

So, veering away from all the great early-60's gals ...
I'm offering up The Reflections instead:
(Just Like) Romeo And Juliet ... I love this song!!!
I'm also surprised it's from early 1964, I'd remembered it
as being a bit older. There's something really touching about
the last doo wop songs (not that "Romeo & Juliet"
is exactly doo wop, but it has that vibe) that overlapped
with the British Invasion ...
