January 15, 1964. An ex-Chicago detective opened a club at Sunset Boulevard
and Clark Street in West Hollywood. He called it Whisky a Go Go. Today, the Chicago Tribune reported that Elmer Valentine died on December 3
(hey – the Trib’s had a lot to report lately). He moved to California after
being indicted, but not convicted, for collecting bribes for a police captain. “I used to moonlight running nightclubs for the Outfit. For gangsters.” Here’s a Record Party tribute to Mr. Valentine and a few of the bands that made their names at
the Whisky a Go Go.

And, of course, the introduction for many of us to the Whisky a Go Go,
JOHNNY RIVERS “Maybelline” and “Memphis”

Some sad news. Dennis Yost, lead singer of the Classics IV has passed away. As I recall, Yost had been incapacitated for several years because of an accident. [Sigh] The group had quite a few hits, such as "Stormy" and "Spooky," and this one:

That really is sad news. Dennis Yost had one of pop music's most
distinctive voices. Here's another one of their hits...

Hey. Liza's At The Palace on Broadway, and I've got tickets for later this month. Will she show up? She's already cancelled a performance this week (she's doing only five a week, instead of the usual for Broadway eight). I hope so; there's nothing like her, at least not these days. Here's a clip from a Kennedy Center performance of some time ago. Gypsy's Mamma Rose is a part she was born to play. Catch the energy and good will coming from this clip, multiply it by about 10,714, and that's what it's like to see her perform in person.

I've recently been jazzed over discovering an Italian western called The Great Silence (1968). If you're into winter wonderland westerns, this is a must. It also features some great music by Ennio Morricone (who else?), which I'll share here with some film stills:

DJ Mook,
Suzy Snowflake was a staple of the early 50's (waaaaay before your time, I'm sure) It was poorly animated, but the song has stuck in my mind all these years. (Not much else in there, obviously). Rosemary Clooney recorded it, and that version is on YouTube also, but I had to go with the "real deal".

Do any of our other DJ's know the story behind this song? If so, would you share it? This feeble mind wants to know.....

Hey DJ Nancy...here's what our Record Party research team
pulled up on "Suzy Snowflake" from our pals at Wikipedia...
"Suzy Snowflake" is a popular Christmas song written by Sid Tepper
and Roy C. Bennett, made famous by Rosemary Clooney in 1951 and
released as a 78 RPM record by Columbia Records, MJV-123.
A cartoon-short based upon the song was also made in 1951
by Centaur Productions. It was shown during the Christmas
season on WGN-TV in Chicago, along with another production by
Centaur, "Hardrock, Coco and Joe".

And here it is...
