Chris,

If your iPod is the kind with a click wheel, this is what I've done to reset mine when it won't come on.

--Make sure the "hold" switch on your iPod is OFF (grey-colored area) and not ON (orange). (I actually toggle it back and forth a few times just to be sure)

--Then hold both the "Menu" and center button (select) simultaneously for about 6 to 8 seconds. (Make sure when pressing the "select" button that you aren't touching any part of the click wheel.) If nothing happens, repeat this step.

This should restart the iPod without losing content. Hopefully.

Chris,
I won't mourn your ipod till you try the last suggestion...
let us know when to break out the candles.

I've tried that but I'll give it another go.

It was weird because we lost power during a storm on Monday when I had it plugged into my computer. It came back on and worked fine. I go to turn it on Wed and the screen went screwy and then nothing. I got the little sad face and the Apple web site on the screen.

I just thought it was cool to have all the songs I wanted right in the palm of my hand.

A few minutes later.....

I tried what you said and nothing happened. I plugged it into the wall and it the Apple showed up but nothing. I plugged it into the computer and got the big circle with the "Do not disconnect" but it is making a funny sound. It's like when you put in a DVD and it is trying to load but won't. The computer and itunes still don't recognize it when it is plugged in... so far.

Still later..

I thought it was back. It played and then it got stuck.

My husband received better news than hoped and no surgery required! YAAAAY! We are still in the information gathering stage and he has to see an endocronologist but hopefully we are on our way to a better future. Thanks to all for your kind thoughts.

I hate to resurrect this thread again what ailed me last year has come back again. I'd orignally had a virus that I thought had left me but two weeks later it came back with a vengence amking me very tired all the time and resulting in me fainting on the school run, very embarrassing. It took me until just before Christmas to start back at work and even though I work only two days I started back on three hours a day, it's slowly increased to five hours which was fine, until I woke up the day after and I couldn't move again, so tired and aching, the thought of the smallest movement seems too taxing, cohesive thought processes go out of the window hence my not posting as often. Hopefully it's a minor setback, keep your fingers crossed.
