"Arguing" is subjective. I, for one, enjoy a vigorous and spirited debate.

Allhallowsday wrote: April 10th, 2023, 11:31 pm Interesting remarks by all. I can see anyone in DYLAN's shoes being a "poser". I may also agree that he is "overrated" but I've known people hate this or hate that. We can all agree to disagree.
But it turns into harassment when you attack the person who's opinion differs from yours.

Another polarizing figure is Tom Waits-some think he's funny & brilliant, while others see him as a Ken Nordine imitator, poser. I see both sides of that argument but like his work anyway. I'd never pay money to see him, but think his work has some merit.
...

Watch your second person, Dearie. I did not "attack" anyone.
Like this: "...it turns into harassment when A PERSON attacks..." :D

EP, you mentioned in the post before the one I quoted that you've reached a stage in your life and also something about speaking freely and not worrying about what people think about you. I reached that stage by my 20's. The sad thing is that most people, if they reach that stage at all, reach it way later in life than they should. This is a bitof digress, but so....

On Easter a couple of brothers in law were discussing something about a big flap made over the company that makes BUD LIGHT beer hiring some hack transgender entertainer to be it's spokesperson. One saying he hoped they ban that beer from being made! I couldn't help it. I jumped in asking, "What if Bud Light was my favorite beer and has been for 20 or more years? Are you saying I should do without it because some people don't like who hawks it?" Then another brother in law asked me, "You mean you wouldn't mind people thinking you're a f*g because you drink Bud Light?" :smiley_huh:
So like you, I had to remind them(in my own way) "Life's too short for me to worry what a bunch of dumb azzes think about me."

Sepiatone Now, resume the topic at hand. :)

jamesjazzguitar wrote: April 11th, 2023, 10:15 am All depends on how one offers their opinion. E.g., when someone says they don't understand, or is baffled that others don't see it like them, that is an insult. So is saying someone is overrated or underrated. I.e. these are examples of criticism of someone's opinion and not criticisms of the actual artist\musician\actor etc. Both are arrogant statements of: I get it, but you don't . . .
I somewhat agree. Tone of voice definitely affects how a message is received.

"I get it, but you don't" is arrogant. But, I disagree that saying someone is overrated or underrated is arrogant. I'll leave it at that. We have a difference of opinion (and outlook on people) on the intention/meaning behind "overrated" and "underrated," and, to me, it's not worth the time and energy to argue the matter.
As for overrated and underrated: Yes we disagree about how one uses these two terms. If I understand your POV, you believe that when a person say, Dan Duryea is underrated they are just saying "I think Dan is great!". When I hear underrated, I hear "I think Dan is great, but the overall consensus is that Dan is not-that-great, and that consensus is misguided, if not downright wrong".

I have found that most of the time when I ask someone that uses those terms how they know someone is underrated or overrated, that they just meant to say, "I think XYZ is great". (thus I'm learning not to read too-much into the use of those terms).

PS: I liked how when someone said a film was the best of its kind, you asked have you seen every film. You don't hold back and I find that refreshing.
Another example of how someone can come off as arrogant when all they are trying to communicate is how much they enjoy something.

Okay!

I have always voiced my opinion and have taken a fair amount of flack for it. Confidence amplifies insecurity.

For example, I have encountered a lot of people who have a high opinion of BLACK SABBATH. I don't.

Accusing someone of not being able to accept being disagreed with and going on to tell them to "get over it" is just an attempt to start a flame.

There is no other purpose to it. Bullies pull that crap all the time.

You have genuine insight. However, we are on a forum. We can call it conversation, but it's really correspondence. Ignore junk mail. I for one have liked your music choices. I also can be emphatic about music I love... and dislike...

Me too. I like and dislike certain songs.

What I don't do is personally attack other members. I leave that to bullies and report it when I see it. Hopefully, administration puts an end to it.

I don't see where anyone attacked anyone, but I believe this post by you is what started cause EP and I to reply: I think Mr. Zimmerman is a brilliant songwriter/lyricist. How anyone who has heard "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" or "Subterranean Homesick Blues" or "Tight Connection" could disagree baffles me. Each to their own, I guess.
****
Why would someone whose POV is that Zimmerman wasn't so brilliant, and thus disagrees with your opinion, baffle you?

Note that while I'm not much of a fan of Dylan, I'm not baffled or confused as to what others see in him. Why are you baffled others don't view Dylan like you do?

I.e. to each their own, FOR SURE. (and not I guess).

A person may express their opinion emphatically.
A person may be sensitive to perceived abuse.
A person may be emphatic expressing their exasperation.
And so it goes.

Call it what you want. Smoking can be deadly. I quit decades ago, but still get my medicine from Dr. Justerini and Dr. Brooks. Not exactly healthy in excess. That's all I wanna say about that.
Not a Dylan fan and will never understand why Lay Lady Lay sounds completely different.
I like Smooth Jazz. Similar to Country Music in the 70s, it kept changing until more people enjoyed it. Not a fan of traditional Jazz, but love real Country.
