I asked a friend who is a hairdresser to save the 'sweepings' of cut hair for me, and I put them in and around the grasses. No rabbits, no cats...just those beautiful grasses! Apparently the scent of human clings to the hair, and repels the critters.. 8)
Hmmm. I do need a hair cut!

I've tried that, though it only seems to affect the deer around here for awhile. Squirrels probably use it to scrub up around my house.

There is a semi-pricey mulch that is supposed to be critter-proof without causing illness among the varmints. I'll look into that next time I go to a nursery.

To all our friends in the Northeast, especially those of you in Western New York, Western Pennsylvania, start preparing for a damaging snow storm now:

We seem to be clear of snow, but are expecting tons of rain and wind. We have actually been in a drought, so we're hoping this will help, not wash away soil and nutrients that we desperately need. We'll see!

After having brunch with friends yesterday I took a 90-minute walk home instead of a ten-minute subway ride. It was a warm, sunny day in Brooklyn, so I thought I'd walk through the neighborhood (Park Slope) and Prospect Park to soak in a nice Sunday afternoon. This is some of what I saw:

1. BICYCLING AND JOGGING BABIES:

2. BROOKLYN ARCHITECTURE: BROWNSTONE, HIGH-RISES and ART DECO BALCONIES:

3. TREES, REEDS and...SWAN LAKE:

4. WHY DON'T YOU REST A BIT HERE AND TAKE IN THE SCENERY:

5. "THE BEST THING FOR THE INSIDE OF A MAN (OR A WOMAN) IS THE OUTSIDE OF A HORSE":

At least that's what Alan Napier said in "Marnie." And I would agree...

Last Friday Maryland had 9 tornadoes. Luckily none of them were anywhere around me. We'll go years without one but 9 in one afternoon is a bit much. The closest was about 15 minutes from my house.
