I do hope our friends in Sandy's path know I am not trying to minimize the seriousness of this storm, just wanted to perhaps give them a smile!!!

The latest update from the Mayor and the CEO of Con Edison has advised that electricity and steam service may be cut to lower Manhattan, south of 14th Street, due to concern about underground flooding in those lower-lying areas, to avoid equipment damage.

A crane attached to a building on West 57 Street was damaged by wind, the boom is hanging over the street. The area has been evacuated, including a large hotel.

A jogger who was running near Prospect Park in Brooklyn, not in the (closed) park but outside it, was hit by a falling tree and has been hospitalized.

The lights in my uptown apartment have flickered a few times, but so far still okay.

If we get through this night okay, we should be all right tomorrow, fingers-crossed.

I can't get NY1 (local news station) on TimeWarner cable. I lost internet for a couple of minutes but it's back. I may shut down the computer, though, just in case. The streetlamp outside my window went out.

So far so good April. Some pretty heavy winds and still some steady rain. At the BWI Airport, which is about 20 minutes from me, they had a 60mph gust and expect about 8 inches of rain when it is done.

So far we have not had any power issues but Carolann thinks she saw flashes that may have been transformers blowing up across the highway. Lots of trees are expected down by morning.

FOX carried a local NY broadcast a little bit ago and showed one area that must have been under about 3 feet of water. I wish I knew what area it was. An interesting thing was it had a phone booth in the shot. I haven't seen one of those in this area for some time.

Not to make light of it because in my line of work I come across folks who have awful and long term issues which they'll have to work on.

i'm so relieved you're alright, chris! tomorrow morning should reveal an interesting situation. it looks like a transformer or something blew at ConEd and 39th street on down is without power. i can see the darkened lights from my window four blocks away. i think parts of lower manhattan saw bad flooding, even the NYSE.

The one thing I forgot to mention is that in Western MD which is about 2 hours away is under a blizzard warning. They are expecting two feet of snow as well as 60 mph winds. This appears to be a first in the history of MD.

Lots of trouble at the beach in Ocean City MD.

Did anyone mention the loss of the HMS Bounty? It was the one built for Brando's 1962 version. 14 were rescued from the ship but one is missing and a body has been recovered.

People were on that ship? Why?! It was rather surreal reading your words...it's like tragedy has struck twice on the Bounty.

I'm amazed at the snow that's behind us. Some crazy weather out there.
