He was as much a part of the spirit of rock and roll as Elvis and
maybe even more so. He was at the heart of what teenagers everywhere
felt about living life on their own terms. He was only twenty-four years
old when he died fifty-three years ago on this very day in the twisted
wreckage of that car crash out on that lonely California highway. The
