Re: *CANDIDS*
Hi Joe,
I love that picture of Joan & Bette; and I think it bears more truth and reality than is commonly known.
My slant on the story is that they got along fine because they were both professionals and there was a time schedule to be met and they had no time for differences.
The day I visited Joan on that set, they were at opposite ends of the soundstage but Joan accompanied me to get a picture autographed by Bette and Bette was very cooperative and nice to me. They didn't seem to have any beef(s) with each other.
I think the provobial 's--t' hat the fan after the movie was in the can and Bette made her "old hags" comment. And then, Joan arranged to pick up the Oscars for the other nominees should Bette not win that year.
As you all know, Bette lost and was livid (I was there and she was not a happy camper)...
The feud then insued but only on Bette's part (Joan kept quiet for the most part) and later Joan withdrew from HHSC two years later and they never were compadres again....

Re: *CANDIDS*
Larry, your summation of Joan & Bette was refreshing and interesting. I would like to think it was really like that except for the fiasco at the Academy Awards. By the way, I was hoping that Bette would win that night for 'Baby Jane'. I thought she was outstanding in the film.

Hi,
Happy Birthday to Mel Brooks - truly a great comic genius....
Lynn, Christie, Paula, David and I were all at the Roosevelt when Robert Osborne interviewed him in the lobby last April.
It was crowded but I did get to see him for an instant!!!

Porter Hall’s wife, Geraldine, and son, David, look on with director Lewis Milestone while the actor plays a death scene for "The General Died at Dawn" (looks like the kid is laughing at his dad)
