How could I have forgotten Aline MacMahon in "The Man from Laramie"? She really added a lot to that movie, more than the "official" heroine.

While we are on the subject of Anthony Mann westerns, I'd like to mention Ruth Roman in "The Far Country." I'm always sad when her character gets shot. (In a lot of ways, she was a replay of Dietrich in "Destry," but with her own style.) Who played the young girl in "Far Country"? She was very good too.

Westerns mostly concentrated on the male characters, but some actresses shone any way.

I wasn't really aware of GAIL RUSSELL till I saw her in "Seven Men From Now." A quiet and lovely performer.

MARIE WINDSOR impressed me in THE BOUNTY HUNTER,playing a strong character .

ELLEN DREW didn't have a lot to do in MAN IN THE SADDLE, but she was so lovely. An actress we should be talking about more. Catch her in JOHNNY O'CLOCK.

DOROTHY MALONE was very good in WARLOCK and TALL MAN RIDING.

I love ANN DVORAK in ABILENE TOWN playing a saloon gal with a snappy line in patter, more than a match for Randolph Scott.

JULIE ADAMS in BEND OF THE RIVER, coming to the realisation that Arthur Kennedy isn't the man she thought he was.

Barbara Stanwyck - FORTY GUNS and THE FURIES (oh, heck -- Barbara Stanwyck in anything)

Susan Hayward - CANYON PASSAGE

Joan Crawford & Mercedes McCambridge - JOHNNY GUITAR (unless, in keeping with the spirit of the thing, one wishes to say that Sterling Hayden, Scott Brady & Ward Bond had the best female roles -- but don't tell them I wrote that)

Claudia Cardinale - THE PROFESSIONALS and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

Teresa Wright - PURSUED

Maybe a bit of tootin' my own horn. Haven't been made into movies yet  but my first two western novels feature female protagonists: "Denim Ryder" and "Montana Dawn".

But back on track, how about birthday gal Virginia Mayo in the (kinda) Ida Lupino role in the HIGH SIERRA remake: COLORADO TERRITORY.

And, along with Ruth Roman, in GREAT DAY IN THE MORNING.

Joanna Dru in Wagon Master - her best role, she's just great

Every woman in Westward the Women

Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles

Miriam Colon in One Eyed Jacks

Katy Jurado in High Noon

Faye Dunaway in Little Big Man

Jane Darwell in Ox Bow Incident - what a bold characterization, really incredible considering her long history in film. She's probably the only one who didn't regret her actions.

Barbara Stanwyck in anything

I don't think Olivia De Havilland has been mentioned yet, in The Proud Rebel (1958)?

Marie Windsor as Doll Brown in Hellfire (1949); I doubt any other actress could have pulled off the role like she did. Co-star Bill Elliot believed so too, which is why he fought to get her cast in the role to begin with.

Oh my god, I have to see this film. I am going on a Marie Windsor movie hunt after this.
