In honor of tonight's showing of The Bride Wore Black (1968), I'd like to spotlight my favorite Thelonius Monk album, Solo Monk (1964). This record jacket can clearly be seen in the background at the apartment of Julie's second victim.

Although I was introduced to Jazz pretty early in life (Big Band was always playing in our house), Solo Monk was one of the first records I considered my own, no doubt due to the great cover art. Monk is older here and had released solo recordings before, but there is a charm to these tunes, many of them standards from the early twenties. While his own songs are included, the album doesn't seem fragmented, but is held together by the continuity of Monk's impeccable phrasing and sense of rhythm.

This weekend I've been revisiting an old favorite from high school days, Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Back in the spring of 1978, when I was packing my bags for my very first tour (of Spain) I played this 45 over and over, until the neighbors complained. :P

You know that nauseating glut of young, boring, runway-pretty, metrosexual vampires littering TV & movies these days?
Ever wonder where they all came from?

OK. So it's been raining pretty much nonstop for the past three months. We've had over 6 inches so far this June. So what if the weatherman promised us a sunny weekend, and now says thunderstorms and possible hail. I think we're getting used to it. When life hands you raindrops --- dance.

I was in the mood for some CSN this morning, but upon finding lackluster versions of Carry On, I stumbled on this this nice cover version. Great job guys!

Another iconic voice of the sixties was silenced this week --
as I just learned from one of MichiganJ's posts -- SKY SAXON,
enigmatic lead singer of THE SEEDS also passed away on
June 25...he, too, will be remembered--certainly here at

Ok, I'm not a big Michael Jackson fan, but Tuck Andress' cover of Man in the Mirror is spellbinding and quite a tribute:

One of the first pop songs I can remember hearing, was playing on a transistor radio as I was wheeled through the children's ward on my way to have my tonsils removed:
