As is this. She appears around the 5:45 mark. From 1933... OTOH, maybe this is the kind of routine Ethel did in vaudeville...

Hmmmm...I think I can see why the Shanghai Lil number in another movie made this same year is much better remembered today than this one is!

Re: Noir Alley
When TCM showed Julie on Doris Day's SUTS day, they could have used the Noir Alley wrap-around already "in the can."
Do you think Eddie would refuse?
They so need to make good use of previously recorded material.
I'm pretty sure everything Robert, and even Tiffany recorded are the property of TCM.
I would love to see more Robert Osborne "classic" introductions.

Re: Noir Alley
Using content created by deceased people is one of the factors involved in the actors strike and has a tie to AI and its usage: both result in less work for the living. This is why the writers are asking for a minimum number of employees (writers) assigned to a project.jimimac71 wrote: ↑August 28th, 2023, 7:42 pm When TCM showed Julie on Doris Day's SUTS day, they could have used the Noir Alley wrap-around already "in the can."

Re: Noir Alley
Sorry but AI is evil at the present moment.
Don't we all love Robert?
The TCM filler elements are from plenty of stars we have lost.
"For Turner Classic Movies, I'm .....".
Many are gone and we are lucky to have their videos.

I care more about the living host that need to earn a living than a dead one that doesn't.
Re: Noir Alley
I don't think any on screen talent makes a living from TCM.
(Since this thread is "Noir Alley," no one can replace Eddie.)

Sorry but you're very confused. They don't work for free.
The TCM hosts do not rely on that income to survive. If they do, I'll eat my hat.

Re: Noir Alley
Of course, they don't rely on only TCM for income, but that has nothing to do with AI and the strike.jimimac71 wrote: ↑August 29th, 2023, 3:02 pmYou are easily confusing. You miss my point.jamesjazzguitar wrote: ↑August 29th, 2023, 1:33 pm

That point (again), is that use of previously created content by dead people or content created by AI (e.g., Osborne giving intros or outros created by AI software), reduces the amount of work available for the living, working humans, and thus impacts their standard of living. Read up on the strike: this point is at the center of it.
Your position appears to be that if only one stream of income is impacted, that is A-OK. That is the same point the studios are making.
Re: Noir Alley
NEVER once did I suggest Robert Osborne being recreated with AI.
That's insane and I'd never support that. TCM would never allow that.
I'm not up on the strike. I seem to be aware streaming needs to pay up.
Chances are TCM would not care to reuse previously recorded material from Robert Osborne.
I consider AI evil only because of how mankind would abuse it.
Microsoft is already abusing it with the Edge browser and Bing.
The chat features starts by itself quite regularly.

Yeah, sure, maybe not Bob Osborne, BUT the REAL question here being how you might feel if they could do this AI thing with Isabel Maria Bastos Osório de Castro e Oliveira and have her conversing directly with and to YOU, jimimac???jimimac71 wrote: ↑August 29th, 2023, 5:33 pm NEVER once did I suggest Robert Osborne being recreated with AI.

Re: Noir Alley
What he did suggest is that TCM re-use Osborne's recorded content. I just pointed out how that is similar to the use of AI: BOTH reduce the opportunities for living performers (host\actors, writers, camera personal etc...). The strike is about more than AI: E.g. actors and writers not getting paid when the content they created is re-sold to a streaming service. (no royalties).Dargo wrote: ↑August 29th, 2023, 5:59 pmYeah, sure, maybe not Bob Osborne, BUT the REAL question here being how you might feel if they could do this AI thing with Isabel Maria Bastos Osório de Castro e Oliveira and have her conversing directly with and to YOU, jimimac???jimimac71 wrote: ↑August 29th, 2023, 5:33 pm NEVER once did I suggest Robert Osborne being recreated with AI.

Since I'm in So Cal, the L.A. Times covers the strike on a daily basis. My take is that both sides are being unreasonable but since they can't even agree to go to binding arbitration, I wouldn't be surprised if the Oscars are cancelled because the industry is still in major turmoil.
Re: Noir Alley
I worked in radio twice. First time automated with reel tape.
No DJs and a skeleton crew. I worked overnight because it was critical to take transmitter readings every three hours and change reels of music.
Job two was a situation with satellite delivered radio.
We had one morning Jock and one drive time.
Again, transmitter readings, and for me, increasing AM transmitter power at sunrise.
Otherwise, I pushed buttons and inserted commercials manually.
They didn't have automation.
This was the 1980s James.
I was minimum wage.
Our only local news radio station has about 24 hours of local news in the course of a full week.
Voice tracking is still done. An announcer records an entire show worth of voicing at one time.
I'm sure the TCM hosts record a whole bunch at once.
Dargo: Talk is cheap. Nice try. You're always hilarious and know how to relax a disagreement.
I wanna hear her voice, etc.
AI could save money. While I don't support it, that is the comparison I'm making.
How did all this happen in the Noir Alley thread?
I'm thinking about the movie "Desk Set," where a computer is feared to eliminate jobs.
The computer was meant to supplement people and make things more efficient.
So that is where AI should be, but human beings can be quite dishonest.
