So Mongo, could you please tell me why Russ Columbo cut such a swath through Hollywood in his day? I've heard him sing, but I just don't get it. Was he kind of the Jason Bieber of his day, or what? Was there really something mysterious about his death? Thanks for any insight.

Moira, this is from IMDb:
Singer Russ Columbo, a major romantic idol in the early 1930s, was in the midst of a highly publicized romance with Carole Lombard (which her studio was said to have strongly opposed) when he was killed in a bizarre shooting "accident" at the age of 26.
The circumstances of Russ Columbo's sudden death, if true, constitute one of the most freakish freak accidents ever brought to popular attention. The story as it is most frequently given runs thus: Columbo was visiting the studio of a photographer friend when the friend, in lighting a cigarette, lit the match by striking it against the wooden stock of an antique French dueling pistol. The flame set off a long-forgotten charge in the gun, and a lead pistol ball was fired. The pistol ball ricocheted off a nearby table and hit Columbo in the forehead, killing him almost instantly. All this took place in about ten seconds.
Russ was a popular crooner in his day ala Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee. His big hit was "Prisoner of Love", and he was also in some films.

That accident is so bizarre, it just might be true. If they wanted to cover it up, wouldn't it have been a less elaborate explanation? I guess Columbo must have been one of those singers who helped the casual bel canto style to take off after the development of the microphone allowed singers to perform in a more intimate manner than the concert hall. Crosby got much of the credit after Columbo's early demise, I guess. Thank you for your answer, Joe.

Moira, I went to YouTube and listened to Russ Columbo and he was pretty good, much like Crosby. It's a shame about the accident.
Then I ended up listening to the fabulous Joni James...be still my heart.

Hi Joe,

Seeing Mother Maybelle recalls to me a story Marjorie Bennett once told everyone at a Marion Davies party for Johnny Ray in 1951.....

She was invited to one of Clifton Webbs afternoon Sunday gatherings and was sitting close by Clifton, when a novice Hollywood arrival asked her, "Are you Mr. Webb's mother?"
Marjorie (a great prankster) replied loudly< "Oh no dear, I'm his wife!!" To which Clifton sputtered and turned green....

Can you produce a photo of dear Marjorie and you'll see the somewhat resemblance to Mother Maybelle...

Happy 132nd Birthday to Ernest Thesiger!

Did you know that in addition to being a one-man creepfest on film, he wrote a classic book about embroidery that was published in 1941? I have a beat.-up copy that I found for 50 cents, but other editions go for as much as $125. The designs are really beautiful too.

Hi,

Happy & Merthful Birthday to Marjorie Bennett.
Joe, that photo of her is perfect - it expresses all the glee & impishness she was up to!!!
She was happiest 'when in company' and was often heard to be squealing and laughing, usually at something she'd started....

And Klondike, you're lucky to be also sharing your party with her!!! She'd blow out your candles and tickle your fancy in no time - platonically, of course!!!
Happy Birthday, Klonnie!!!! :D
