Charliechaplinfan, the bird your father-in-law had in mind may have been the shrike.
Hard to believe he hasn't heard of soy and that it's not listed in his dictionary. :o :?:

It is difficult to keep a straight face but at least my Mum doesn't mind us laughing at her but my father in law, he gets into such a grump and he did mean a shrike but he wouldn't have it. You can imagine how inventive their cuisine is, he had heard of soy sauce but only soy sauce was right, no such word as soy. He wouldn't have it, even after being proved wrong. He is the man you can't play a board game with. I bought him a crossword puzzle book for Christmas as one of his presents, now who did the Angel appear to to announce Christ's birth, beginning with s? No, it wasn't the shepherds, it had to be St something but he hasn't got the something yet.

It's the same here, if you watch newsbroadcasts with lettering at the bottom of the screen, they have so many mistakes. Gone are the days when you could rely on a spelling being right and actually learn correct spelling from the BBC.

Ah, I'll be turning into my father in law soon, grumble, grumble.

That's too funny, from the outside looking in of course. Not so funny when it's your family.

Ah no, the father in law is his family, not mine, I just inherited that side of the family, I make sure the kids know, he's your father's Dad, they picked up on that ages ago. We've had many choice memories over the years. The best description of my father in law is a distracted scientist, he is a scientist by profession, knows his stuff but he's hazy with common sense.

I used to work in a hospital. A young doctor asked if she could take a patient's chart home for the weekend. "Actually...no. It works better if the patient and the chart are in the same building!"

Yep, that sounds like someone in a similar frame of mind. My father in law was constantly losing his own kids when they were little, he'd just forget they were with him.

I'm not sure who got the best deal, me or Chris, I have enough fruitcakes in my family too.

Actually he got the best deal because he got me
