I wanted to give a head's up to those with recording ability that one of the all time great films (and one that appeared on my list of the greatest ever in CL's thread) will be on this Thursday night.
King Vidor's "The Crowd" is a stunning achievement. It follows the life of a young man as he grows to adulthood and comes to terms with his place in society. If that sounds a bit dry, it sounded that way to Louis B. Mayer too, who hated it. But King Vidor could do no wrong after the success of The Big Parade, and Irving Thalberg backed him, so the movie was made.
And it's not dry -- it's the compelling tale of an everyman, made with a realism that's the antithesis of the MGM style.
It's very rarely shown on TCM. My current copy is a dub from a videotape I made in the 1990s.
Highly recommended. Be sure not to miss it.
Tivo/VCR Alert -- a truly great film
