This reminds me of watching GWTW on TV with my daughter, who was about 8 at the time, and was seeing Gable for the first time. We came to the scene where Scarlett and Rhett are fleeing Atlanta. You know the one -- burning Atlanta in the background, Gable and Leigh in semi-shadow:

Margo: What's his name again?
Me: Clark Gable.
Margo: Oh. [Long pause] He's . . . . . . . nice.
Me: Yeah. Nice.

I love your story, Judith---it reminds me of my own reaction around that age when I first saw this movie
on TV with my mom. I swear it was the beginning of the realization for me that boys were very different
to girls. Clark Gable started up a lot of trouble for me!

Why can't we all have a Clark Gable........

When I was a kid, my older sister had a Clark Gable of her very own. He stood about 6 feet tall, and was made of cardboard.

One year for Christmas, my boys gave me Tom Selleck....wearing nothing but an inadequate towel. I had to put him in the closet, every time I walked past him my knees seemed to turn to water. Wish I knew where ol' Tom was!

When I was seventeen, my best friend gave me a huge poster of this image:

Do you suppose any kids out there today put up pics of Gable in their rooms? My sister also had one from GWTW - you know where he is playing cards, and there is a drink and a cigar I think? He wears a white shirt, and maybe a cape? And on the other side of the room was Rick from Casablanca,in his white suit with a drink, like twin images. It was heaven to go in her room.

MissG, do you remember posting a pic over at the other site, of Gable in GWTW costume? I think he was standing, and he had the most melancholy, almost haunted look? ....really deep. It was so long ago, maybe a year and a half ago but I always remembered that picture. I'm sorry I can't tell you more about it.

That's the poster - it was huge!

And as far as the standing one, oh, my gosh, yes. You got it. It's beautiful.

All that being said, the one in the cap and watch is .... nice......

Yeah yeah...he got the top votes in an Ed Sullivan poll along with Myrna Loy back in 1938. There is a reason why Clark Gable is called "THE KING." And the picture with him in the costume coat says it all. He is a man's Man. He is all Man especially when he cries.
