Methinks that ChiO has been viewing Paris, Texas (1984) of late. The mention of Harry Dean Stanton, (whom I like even though many of his performances sometimes seem awfully similar), Russ Tamblyn and Klaus' baby girl, Natassia Kinski all make me think of that haunting Wim Wenders film.
No, I haven't watched PARIS, TEXAS lately, but will as soon as we return to our real home and the media is in working order. But, yes, that was part of the combo of movie association & "six degrees of separation". Started as "favorite teen punks", but Vic Morrow didn't have enough movies to fill a day. Then, Sal Mineo, whom I adore. Which meant REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE which meant Dennis Hopper and knives which meant Russ nee Rusty Tamblyn and his latter-day grizzled look which meant Harry Dean Stanton (with a punk tie to Morrow) which, of course, meant Dean Stockwell (with a certain scary-funny connection with Hopper thanks to David Lynch) and Natassia's very scary (and talented) father.

And speaking of teenage punks and potential TCM guests -- might be able to do 24 hours of Richard Bakalyan.

ChiO -

How about a Peter Falk day?

I'd kind of like to see an Ian Hunter day.

D'oh! Of course -- I was trying to think of how to get John Cassavetes in without a too heavy reliance on his films that he didn't direct -- Peter Falk, of course, and...Gena Rowlands.

Put me on the bandwagon for an Ian Hunter Day. He may have been a mere foil to the likes of Kay Francis and Mary Astor, but he was in some great movies and, to me, seemed rather sweet but not treacly in almost everything. If you want to see another, older, not so sweet but balding and quite good side to Ian, check out Fortune Is a Woman (1957) aka She Played With Fire sometime. I always liked what Michael Powell wrote about him in one of his autobiographies, describing him--with affection and understatement--as "fat and lazy" but "a good comedian."

Powell always tried to put Roger Livesey in movies whenever he could, but British movie mogul Michael Balcon didn't care for the actor Powell described as the "broad-shouldered, golden-haired Viking," in part because Balcon didn't care for "his lovely, husky voice...I vowed to myself that one day I would Roger's husky voice beloved all over the world. And I did." Guess who Balcon approved for this and several other parts after he rejected Livesey? Ian Hunter!

I could have sworn that TCM did a Cassavetes, Falk and Gena Rowlands day, but hey, why not?

Donald Meek day would be keen and he certainly was in great movies (as well as interesting failures).

Pola Negri or Alla Nazimova days would be really interesting too. Both were major stars and worked in sound as well as silents, which is always interesting to see contrasted.

Of major stars, has Charles Boyer ever had his own 24 hours?

Gad! How could I forget Charles Boyer? I would die, just die of happiness if he were picked, he deserves it so much! Such a great actor and star.

That's funny stuff about Ian Hunter, maybe that's why I like him. He doesn't really have the qualities on the established leading man checklist -he's pudgy and kind of goofy. I like his good-naturedness, and his loose demeanor and wit. I find him the perfect sympathetic and stunned friend in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. His Theseus in A Midsummer's Night Dream is exactly as it should be, full of bravado and humor. There are a couple of Ian Hunter films I just love, including Girl from 10th Ave. on just this morning, I Found Stella Parrish, and Confession, with Kay Francis. I like it when he gets a deeper role, like Strange Cargo, or one where he is a drunk or a man who is troubled, and my favorite of these is The Long Voyage Home. I positively weep over him in that one.

I would love either Pola or Alla day, the more silents, the better - it might be fun to show both Pola and Gloria during SUTS, because of the rivalry they once had.

I know the many actors I'd like to see may not have a body of work that could fill a 24-hour period. Some were not leads so they have a small amount of screen time. And because I don't have an archival memory, I may be repeating actors that TCM has already featured. But below are my nominees for TCM's SUTS' month-long marathon.

Image

CHARLES LAUGHTON - I've seen him play some pretty sadistic characters. Even saw a midnight showing of "Island of Lost Souls" at the TCM FF. ( That was a mistake... scary dreams. ) But he really endeared me to him in "Ruggles of Red Gap" in a role so vastly different from the way I usually associate him, that I now declare him: "The Greatest Character Actor In Our Solar System."

* * *

MARGARET LINDSAY - I think she's one of the quintessential actresses of the 30's. I know...there's a long list of actresses ahead of her; you can strike a piñata at the thirties and oodles of gals would come popping out. But she stands out for me ( hey, these are my nominees...get yer own ) for playing women who are smart, competent and true. Not really ever "the other woman" she's a good supporting actress. She needed better scripts with more distinct characters. My kingdom for "The House of the Seven Gables."

* * *

MARY ASTOR - There's something about Mary. Here's an actress who can play a lying greedy femme fatale w/a penchant for private eyes & a bird statue, an early 20th century mom who doesn't want to move to St. Louis, a blowsy barfly who helps a man on the run or a hard-bitten owner of a gambling casino whose daughter goes after her old lover. Well I just have to include her. I have to.

* * *

VICTOR MATURE - I'm not going to lie. Mature's hunkability is just too irresistible for me not to want to watch him all day. < Blush! > But on the outside, while it looks like I'm just mindlessly gazing at how he fills out a double breasted suit, I've seen him quietly convincing and very natural in a couple of parts like: "I Wake Up Screaming" "Kiss of Death" "Violent Saturday" and I loved him in "Shanghai Gesture" ( 'I sent my soul through the invisible...' ) He, too, needed better scripts. But you know what's wrong with just getting a look at a nice wide swath of an actor's work?

* * *

FAY BAINTER - Aaaaaah, now there's an actress. Doesn't her name SOUND like it belongs on a marquee? Authoritative, cultured or homespun with common sense, she was a delicate actress with a light touch. I've enjoyed her in "Woman of the Year" "Jezebel" "Cry Havoc" and at the end "The Children's Hour." I want to see a day of Bainter iterations and watch Bainter navigate through Womanhood on the screen.

* * *

CLAIRE TREVOR - This 'big league blonde' is a little bit of a mystery to me. Oh yeah I've covered: "Dead End" "Murder, My Sweet" "Born to Kill" or "Key Largo" but I'd like to mine her career; see what 30's nuggets TCM can come up with. I love her speaking voice and I believe her in whatever I've seen her in. I would donate a kidney for the chance to see (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029349/) "One Mile From Heaven" with Fredi Washington.

* * *

WALTER HUSTON - A misguided president, an unhappily married retired businessman, a Yankee Doodled Dad or winding up a grizzled old prospector, I think he can do anything. Heck, his son even got him an Academy Award. I am in love with Walter Huston and I want to spend 24-hours straight watching him change identities.

* * *

EDWARD G. ROBINSON - He might not be the Romantic Hero, but clearly he's a hero of amazing versatility. Not only did he help Pharoah get those pyramids built, but he was a ruthless S.0.B. mob leader holed up in a Florida motel ( and not a very understanding boyfriend ), a kindly Norwegian farmer ( do they come any other way? ) a doggedly determined insurance claims investigator ( "Closer than that Walter," ) and a milquetoast-y artist/ pedicurist. Really: he played a man happily painting Joan Bennett's toe nails, and didn't get shot for doing that. I'd love to watch a day with him. Hey, can you do what he can?

* * *

ELLA RAINES - I think she's one of the quintessential actresses of the 40's. Where have you heard that before. Okay. She's not like Stanwyck, Davis, Russell. But on a slightly lower tier, I think Raines held her own in playing smart women in tailored outfits. She's the best friend a business executive ever had. But she could be an outdoors girl too. She worked with Preston Sturgess, did "Phantom Lady" and was another one of those slightly lower-tiered actresses who needed scripts with characters that would pop for her. She had a quiet sultriness and stopped John Wayne dead in his tracks...with her six shooter.

* * *

ROCK HUDSON - He suffers the same fate as beautiful women in Hollywood did; not...being...taken...seriously. That would be a mistake. It's not easy to be able to do dramas and comedies. Be Madison Avenue and be a cowboy. And look gorgeous doing it. Now I ask you, what's so horrible about spending twenty-four hours looking at Rock Hudson?

I can't say that every Ward Bond movie is a gem, but the range of his work includes some great films (I'm very fond of his work in The Long Voyage Home).
