Hotel du Nord (1938)
1h 50m | Drama
A young man botches a suicide pact with his lover and tries to evade the law.

Director
Marcel Carnt
Cast
Annabella, Louis Jouvet, Jean Pierre Aumont

"The film was previewed on 10 December 1938, at the Cinema Marivaux in Paris. Critics applauded the film as "sunny" and noted Carné's elaborate staging.

Contemporary critics had a mixed response to the film. Time Out called it, "a very likeable film, but...Carné's 'poetic realism' seems a trifle thin and hesitant in this populist yarn about a sleazy Parisian hotel and its inhabitants."[5] Film critic Richard Roud called Hôtel du Nord "delightful but unimportant."[6] Senses of Cinema noted that Hotel du Nord has been ignored by contemporary critics because it came between Carné's two masterpieces Port of Shadows and Le jour se lève.....

Fist of Fury (1972)

"... also known as The Chinese Connection,[3] is a 1972 Hong Kong action martial arts film written and directed by Lo Wei, produced by Raymond Chow, and starring Bruce Lee in his second major role after The Big Boss (1971).[3]
Lee, who was also the film's action choreographer, plays Chen Zhen, a student of Huo Yuanjia, who fights to defend the honor of the Chinese in the face of foreign aggression, and to bring to justice those responsible for his master's death....

The film was produced by the Golden Harvest film production company, still in its infancy at the time, and it was Lee's second kung fu film. The film touched on sensitive issues surrounding Japanese colonialism, and featured fairly realistic fight choreography for its time. It differs from other films in the genre for its historical and social references, especially to Japanese imperialism......

in North America, John Gillett of the Monthly Film Bulletin reviewed a 106 minute dubbed version of the film in May 1973.[25] Gillett commented on Bruce Lee stating that he had "somewhat rudimentary and charmless acting style (all curled lips, sinister glances and clenched fists), but he performs his main function-that of keeping the action going through a series of furious karate fights-with considerable aplomb and proves as adept with his feet as with his fists."[25] While finding the story "extremely naive" and that the "anti-Japanese bias is more rather more pronounced" while the fight sequences "are staged with tremendous vigour (and a judicious use of slow-motion)" concluding that "the production values are only moderate, with a rather uneasy fusion of studio interiors and real street locations, and the English dubbing is unusually inept."[25]

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an aggregated review score of 83% based on 18 critic reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10....

Way of the Dragon (1972)

"...originally released in the United States as Return of the Dragon) is a 1972 Hong Kong martial arts action comedy film co-produced and directed by Bruce Lee, who also stars in the lead role. This is Lee's only complete directorial film and the last one released during his lifetime. The film co-stars Nora Miao, Robert Wall, Wei Ping-ou and Chuck Norris (playing his debut screen role).

The Way of the Dragon was released in Hong Kong on 30 December 1972, and in the United States in August 1974. The film went on to gross an estimated US$130 million worldwide (equivalent to over $700 million adjusted for inflation), against a tight budget of $130,000, earning a thousand times its budget. It was the highest-grossing Hong Kong film up until Lee's next film Enter the Dragon (1973). ....

SUN., 11-12

The Proud & the Profane (1956)

.... a 1956 American romantic drama film directed by George Seaton and starring William Holden and Deborah Kerr with Thelma Ritter, Dewey Martin, William Redfield and Peter Hansen in supporting roles. It was made by William Perlberg-George Seaton Productions for Paramount Pictures released in theaters on June 13, 1956.[2] The film was and produced by William Perlberg, from a screenplay by George Seaton, based on the 1953 novel The Magnificent Bastards by Lucy Herndon Crockett.....

Film critic Bosley Crowther of The New York Times wrote in his review: "ANOTHER exhaustive contemplation of the effects of a wartime romance on a sensitive and susceptible woman is put forth in The Proud and Profane, a William Perlberg-George Seaton production for Paramount that came to the Astor yesterday. The lady who runs the emotional gamut for all to behold in this film is an American Red Cross worker at Noumea in the South Pacific during World War II, and the gentleman with whom she dilly-dallies more than somewhat is a major of American marines. With Deborah Kerr as the lady and William Holden as the marine, two earnest and versatile performances are initially guaranteed. That is the virtue of this picture. Miss Kerr does a continuously interesting job as a nervous and self-pitying widow of a marine killed on Guadalcanal who falls for the rough, tough, ruthless major that Mr. Holden plays. And he, in turn, commands attention with the unrelenting vigor and sting that he gives to this hardbitten soldier who starts the chase with only one thing in mind."

The Todd Killings (1971) (AKA "Skipper")
1h 33m | Crime

"Skipper Todd (Robert F. Lyons) is a ne'er-do-well who spends his time wanting to be a rock star and playing mentor to the local high school crowd while sponging off of his mother (Barbara Bel Geddes). He is also the chief suspect in the disappearance of a local girl. After befriending naive Billy Roy (Richard Thomas), Todd sets his sights on Roberta (Belinda Montgomery).
It is based on the true crimes of serial killer Charles Schmid in the 1960s. ....

Director
Barry Shear
Cast
Robert F. Lyons, Richard Thomas, Belinda Montgomery, Gloria Grahame

".... The film is extremely low budget and doesn't contain a single moment of bloody violence, but the nihilistic ambiance is nevertheless horrifying and the (admittedly gratuitous) sequences of underage nudity form unpleasant confrontations with the wayward world of the 60's.
One year after this, Barry Shear directed his most famous film; the stupendous Blaxploitation themed cop-thriller "Across 110th Street". They are two completely different movies proving Shear was a very gifted but sadly underrated filmmaker.
.... It features a tremendous script and great supporting roles from Barbara Bel Geddes(Vertigo), Gloria Grahame (The Big Heat) and a bit part from Michael Conrad (Un Flic, Hill Street Blues). ...

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993)
1h 54m | Action | TV-14
Biopic on the late martial arts film star, Bruce Lee.
Director
Rob Cohen
Cast
Jason Scott Lee, Lauren Holly, Robert Wagner

".....The film follows the life of actor and martial artist Bruce Lee (Jason) from his relocation to the United States from Hong Kong to his career as a martial arts teacher, and then as a television and film actor. It also focuses on the relationship between Bruce and his wife Linda Lee Cadwell, and the racism to which Bruce was subjected.

The primary source of the screenplay is Cadwell's 1975 biography Bruce Lee: The Man Only I Knew. Other sources include Robert Clouse's book Bruce Lee: The Biography and research by Cohen, including interviews with Cadwell and Bruce's son, Brandon Lee. Rather than a traditional biographical film, Cohen decided to include elements of mysticism and to dramatise fight scenes to give it the same tone as the films in which Bruce starred. Dragon was filmed primarily in Hong Kong, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story received generally positive reviews, with critics typically finding it entertaining despite criticisms of its veneration of Bruce. Jason was widely praised for his performance. .....

Bruce Lee: A Dragon Story (1976)
1h 31m | Action

".... is a 1974 Bruceploitation film starring Bruce Li. The film is a loose biopic about martial arts actor Bruce Lee and centers on his supposed affair with actress Betty Ting-Pei. The film is notable for being the first biopic of Bruce Lee (it was released the year following his death), the debut film of notorious Lee imitator Bruce Li, and the first film in the Bruceploitation genre. ...
A review by the website, cityonfire.com gave the film 4 out of 10. The reviewer said "Make no mistake, "Bruce Lee: A Dragon Story" is a terrible Bruceploitation movie. The shits and giggles come automatically due to the horrendous dubbing (it's so bad, it's good!) and all that other cheesy retro stuff".......

Black Angel (1946)
1h 23m

".... is one of the least-seen of the many films noirs recently released on DVD, but it's a good one, and it features Dan Duryea in an unusually romantic role. The actor best-known for playing oily, duplicitous tough guys here shines as a much nicer and sympathetic character. But don't get the impression that Black Angel is a romance - it most certainly is noir. The story, from a Cornell Woolrich novel, takes the form primarily of a mystery, with suprising and believable plot twists.

When John Phillips is unjustly convicted of a murder he didn't commit and police detective Broderick Crawford stops his investigation, Phillips' wife June Vincent carries on looking for the real killer. Her detective work leads her to the alcoholic Duryea, who decides to help her. In a truly crackpot story development, they masquerade as a singer-and-pianist performing duo to infiltrate the nightclub of Peter Lorre, who has aroused their suspicions. And along the way, Vincent and Duryea develop feelings for each other.

Black Angel is an unusual noir not just for its casting but for the fact that its oppressive fatalism isn't really clear until the end. Then it hits you, ...."

And according to Francis M. Nevins: "Neill and cinematographer Paul Ivano invest every shot with a visual style which translates Woolrich as any novel needs to be translated: with total fidelity to its essence and little if any to its literal text."[2] Some credit must also go to Dan Duryea's interpretation of the part of Marty Blair, who "remains the most sympathetic character in the film ...."

Thanks for the recommendation, I've never seen the film, and I've set to record. I like Roy William Neill's work. He directed most of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films, which I love, and which have wonderful atmosphere. He also directed one of my favorite Universal horror films: Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. Black Angel was his last movie.
