Distant Voices, Still Lives, a film by the great British director Terence Davies.

(Pete Postlethwaite and "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" relate to some of your other clues.)

One of my favorites and a good guess, but not the film we're going for.

The Subject Was Roses takes place in 1945, mostly in the Bronx, which is in the State of New York. The movie I''m looking for takes place in 1906, in an adjacent state.

As the con man sits on the beach contemplating his successful heist, he's unaware that the woman he had earlier conned into marrying him and had left behind, had legally come into many times the amount he had just stolen.

Second clue: This film featured the very first film (and uncredited) appearance by an actor who a dozen years hence would go on to be a top star in the movies.
