BOT Infestation?

Post by TikiSoo »

One of the things I like about this board is "who's online" feature. Alas, I'm usually alone at 5am Eastern time.

I did notice this AM, 2 "guests" were also on, two BOTS: one had a foreign name I didn't recognize, the other bot was Google. So are these bots looking for keywords to exploit? Or personal information?

One reason why I don't post photos of myself unless in costume.

These BOTS are built into the board and not something nefarious. They're used to allow Google and other services to return search results for instance. Here is the description from the board software of why they exist:

“Bots”, “spiders” or “crawlers” are automated agents most commonly used by search engines to update their databases. Since they rarely make proper use of sessions they can distort visitor counts, increase load and sometimes fail to index sites correctly. Here you can define a special type of user to overcome these problems.
