‘Cavalcade’: THR’s 1933 Review

On Jan. 5, 1933, the Diana Wynyard-starring drama Cavalcade made its world premiere in New York and was greeted with acclaim. The film went on to win three Oscars at the 6th Academy Awards ceremony, including best picture. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:

"Twentieth Centry Blues" is my favorite Noel Coward song, introduced in Cavalcade by Ursula Jeans, who was married to Roger Livesey. Her elder sister Isabel Jeans was married for a time to Claude Rains.

Noel himself recorded a splendid rendition of the song as well, as did Marianne Faithfull:
