A Database of Screentime Percentages of 95 Years of Oscar-Nominated Performances
Posted: March 7th, 2023, 12:40 pm
It is the month of March again, so it means that it is 31 Days of Oscar on TCM all month, and also the month of another Oscar ceremony. While most of us have by now seen many of the old standbys on TCM, and not as many tune in anymore to the actual ceremony, I thought it would be interesting to provide something that might provide interest.
A onetime online acquaintance of mine runs a website called ScreenTime Central where he provides information on the runtime and percentages of the screen time almost all of the 1,813 performances nominated for Academy Awards over the past 95 years. The only omissions are 5 performances from the Oscars' earliest years, three of which are in completely lost films. But otherwise he provided complete work.
Screen time is defined as the percentage of a film where a person is at least seen partially onscreen or if their voice is heard when they are physically out of the frame. In transferring the statistics, I took the liberty of eliminating the actual runtime to focus on the actual percentages for every year, since to do it otherwise would be an extra penalty to those in shorter films. You will notice that it is typical for one leading nominated performance in a given year to actually have a shorter time onscreen than one of the supporting nominees.
I hope you will find this sprawling database interesting. It took a lot of work for my acquaintance to time all these films, and it took me a long while to reformulate these time tables via descending percentages for every year's ceremony. So, sit back and get ready to delve into some interesting statistics.
