Summer Under the Stars Wishlist

Post by speedracer5 »

With the July schedule released, that means that the annual Summer Under the Stars (SUTS) schedule should be available within the next month or so. Who would you like to see featured this year? While I know that some of the days will feature the usual suspects, I'd love to see some of the less featured stars get a SUTS day.

Here's my list, in no particular order:

4 Claudette Colbert
5 Glenda Farrell
6 Fred MacMurray

Will the Programming Challenges from the TCM forum ever return here?
While I don't like basic TCM themes, I enjoy creativity.
Great List. Not the same old, same old. (But you said that). <grin>
Love Harold Lloyd!

Wow, I was just thinking about this the other day! Perfect timing. You have some great choices in your list. It's nice to see some character actors listed, as I believe they deserve more love and attention.

Here is my list, in no particular order, which focuses on actors usually not included. Sure, some of them may not be considered "stars" because they didn't do a ton of leading roles, but they are still very interesting and important and deserve a spotlight! They are all stars to me. <3

I love that you mentioned so many stars who were prominent during pre-code era. No joke, the last 4-5 precodes in a row that I've watched have featured the dream team of Frank McHugh and Guy Kibbee. Those two were in everything! I would welcome days devoted to either one of them. Roscoe "well shut my big nasty mouth" Karns seems to pop up a lot too. I can never get enough Joan Blondell.

@speedracer5
That's what's kind of fun about character actors, especially during the studio era -- they are are like familiar friends who surprise you with their presence in a film you did not expect them in. It is always a joy to sit down to watch a film one hasn't heard of and then see names like Frank McHugh in the opening credits.

@HoldenIsHere
What a nice mix of eras on your list! A few months ago I was wondering whatever happened to Richard Gere, as he seemed to be in everything in the 90s.

I'm no good at this sort of thing, so instead I will vote for HoldenIsHere.
I like classic movies but know nothing about them as some on this forum do.
Holden's list has more names I'm familiar with and people I like.
You could replace Cary Grant with Richard Dreyfus.

I thought about including Richard Dreyfus on my list.

I say split each 24 hour period into 2-12 hour segments.
I looked at the 2022 SUTS schedule and some days had 15 movies.
It might be a stretch to find that many films for some stars AND those TCM could show.
If it was me, having 31 different film categories would be more fun.
An entire day of Noir!
Silent Films, Pre-Codes, Musicals, you get my drift.

Ellen Burstyn has a unique screen persona and I find her very compelling. I've been discovering her 60s TV work where she was credited as Ellen McRae until 1968. E.g. Gunsmoke - what a devil, but what an alluring one! It isn't that she is overwhelmingly beautiful, but that she uses all of her abilities to trap man after man. What a femme fatale. Her character even has the gall to believe she can pull one over on Marshal Dillon.

I find it interesting that her movie career didn't really take-off until she played a mother, E.g., the mother of Cybil Sheppard in The Last Picture Show in 1971, when she was just 39.

Yes, the GUNSMOKE episode you're referring to is called "Wagon Girls."
She was born Edna Rae Gillooly.

As I mentioned in another thread, Ellen Burstyn does so much without seeming to do anything.

Burstyn was in 3 Gunsmoke episodes and the one I was referring to wasn't Wagon Girls, which I have seen, where she plays a misguided young woman that is good at heart. That one also features Constance Ford who has a "thing" for Mat Dillon. I really love Wagon Girls but I admit more for Ford than anyone else in that episode.

The one I was referring to Burstyn plays a married woman on a ranch just outside of Dodge, has her husband killed by a man she takes up with, then she gets her married man neighbor to kill that man, and then she gets that man killed by Mat for the murder she put in motion. Thus, she is responsible for 3 deaths! At the end when Mat comes to arrest her, she has the nerve to believe he will not because she is just too much of a woman for any man.

Yea "Ellen Burstyn does so much without seeming to do anything": one of those actresses that can convey a lot of emotion and inner feelings without saying a thing.
