Went with "The Crowd." I just don't think "Sunrise" was Murnau's best film. It was unquestionably great, but "The Crowd" was an amazing film on all levels.

I watched West of Zanzibar directed by Tod Browning and starring Lon Chaney. If you like Tod Browning movies, this is a must. You owe it to yourself to check out the remake, Kongo with Walter Huston in the Lon Chaney role. It's not as good, but it's orders of magnitude more lurid, if you can believ...

I have to apologize for being lost in the work ozone for so much of the week, but wanted to say thank you to Ken Winokur for being here. It's been a fascinating discussion. If you have time before you leave, would it be pssible for you to talk a little bit about how you became interested in silent m...

Whew. I finally made it back. We talked about this briefly, but I found it fascinating that Underworld is a Paramount movie. They've generally had the worst record for supporting silents of any of the majors. Can you talk a little bit about how you managed to get support for doing Underworld (which ...

We talked briefly about this, but can you give us an idea of how the process is different for comedies vs. more dramatic films? I know you said that the other guys don't like to listen to previous scores, but is there something else that serves as inspiration for the group as a whole?

Questions for Ken Winokur

Back in May, I went to the Maryland Film Festival to see a screening of Josef Von Sternberg's silent gangster drama Underworld with a live score by Alloy Orchestra. The movie and the score were simply brilliant. I was entranced for an hour and a half, both by the film and music. After the show was o...

Lost Metropolis footage discovered

I've been mostly AWOL from here due to real life, but I'm kind of amazed not to see any discussion of this. Apparently a bunch of lost footage from Lang's 1927 Metropolis has been discovered in Argentina. The museum director from Buenos Aires had something special in her luggage: a copy of a long ve...

It was episode 617 under its US release title, The Sword and the Dragon. I was just watching this on my iPod last week.

The MST3K version is on YouTube in 10 segments, beginning here.

Great episode. One of my favorites.

My two boys and I went to see my mom in the nursing home. They were about 20 and 24 at the time. Mom had had a really bad day, fretful, upset, confused, angry, the whole bad deal. When we left, I was terribly upset, crying, etc. I told my two guys, "If I get like that, just put a pillow over m...

Watch it as soon as possible. It's possibly the finest film ever made, and every time I'm asked for my top movies, that goes on top. A brilliant film in every way.
