Re: Joel McCrea: May Star of the Month on TCM
I think I have another copy somewhere. Let me see if I can find it and copy it for you.
Watching The More the Merrier again, I was charmed by the set dressing. That large silver framed photo of Abraham Lincoln was so appropriate for Miss Milligan's apartment. It takes up a shot that is just Connie's face and that photo, sitting on a table behind her slightly off focus - it's a huge picture, and dwarfs everything else on the table. A prized posession. Connie, a woman who has such high ideals, was, I am sure, a little in love with Lincoln, it's quite clear to me now, and is looking for a real life Lincoln, which she will never find. Until of course, Mr. Dingle shows up.
The breakfast table cracked me up, with all these little egg cups and that cow creamer! For a woman who has become so regimented, it's an odd mix of everything in it's place, and whimsical overflow.... kind of like the movie itself.
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

I was a little disappointed that Buffalo Bill isn't on the SOTM bill, but still excited for this salute to a favorite.
Last night, I enjoyed The More The Merrier and Palm Beach Story again!
Jackie and Miss G, I thorougly appreciate and adore your new avatars.

Thanks Miss SueSue, I was hoping it would be shown too.
But lets take a page from Joel's book - he seemed pretty laid back about everything!

"Buffalo Bill" has shown up on Encore Westerns from time to time. I'll keep an eye out.

BUFFALO BILL is a cute little adventure. Hard not to like it. KnitWit, STARS IN MY CROWN is a Jacques Tourneur film. I hope you get to watch it.
Jean Arthur has a photo of Abraham Lincoln on her table
Are you sure it's not Raymond Massey?

I've seen Stars, but want to record it...same with Palm Beach Story and Trooper Hook. I'll get them, I'm sure. Cable guy just gave me a brand new DVR/cable box, so I'm good to go.

Women in hats are very elegant and lovely. Everything about that picture (and the one in that "wrap") only confirm what I already knew.
I've also enjoyed reading your comments. One year we'll have several blogs going.

Re: Joel McCrea: May Star of the Month on TCM
My dream is to have all of us at the TCM Fest at once. What a party!.
We will start on a Thursday at Musso and Frank's, which is their "Chicken Pot Pie" day. (The secret seems to be fresh cream, moist chunks of white meat, and pearl onions. ) Then we will all discuss our priority screenings, and be silly and laugh hysterically at our good fortune.
Then we will all don our finery for the special screening and then hop on over to the Vanity Fair party when Alec Baldwin will summarily ignore us during the lightening round of Words With Friends.
Thank you for the sweet comments!

Re: Joel McCrea: May Star of the Month on TCM
.
I'm enjoying some of these early (1930's) McCrea movies today (Thursday). I've DVR'd them and watching one by one and deleting as I go along (I only get so much room on my company installed DVR, so I have to be careful what I keep).
Among others, today I watched Bird of Paradise 1932, starring Joel and Dolores Del Rio. What a sad ending for this otherwise entertaining movie. I guess it was inevitable but even so, considering most early 30's movies don't usually affect me, this one got me almost to tears. Lovely story about a young fellow who decides to spend a little more time on an island with a girl who caught his eye while his buddies sail around and plan to pick him up in a couple of weeks, but things happen and we're left with a different scenario than expected. I can't say much to avoid spoiling it for others who haven't seen it yet, so I'll just add . . . have a box of Puffs alongside of you.

Re: Joel McCrea: May Star of the Month on TCM
Well, I've been watching The Great Man's Lady, and I absolutely adore it.
Barbara Stanwyck is amazing as she ages from youth to 100 years old. Her costumes are stunning, and Joel is so sexy!
Mr. O describes the plot as similar to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance in that it reveals the true story about the background of a great man, but it was actually the great woman who helped him succeed. And all the reporters would rather print the myth.
And there are also elements of The Grapes of Wrath, and , for effect, of course, "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah" swells right before Stanwyck's last speech, and then the credits follow.
Stanwyck is charming in this role. I have never seen it, and I am so glad that I stumbled on this treasure tonight.
And Robert O. discussed the Joel and Frances McCrea Ranch Foundation, and its new visitor center, about an hour from L.A.
