Dust off your six-shooters, choose the Top-Gun Western ever!

I won't make a list until I've seen these titles which I have on order:

Bend of the River (1952)
The Naked Spur (1953)
The Man from Laramie (1955)
River of No Return (1954) (I've read it's weak, but it's got Robert Mitchum)

Yes, think of all those Robert Mitchum westerns I've never seen, like:
Pursued (1947)
Rachel and the Stranger (1948)
Blood on the Moon (1948)
The Lusty Men (1952)
Man with the Gun (1955)

And most of the Jacques Tourneur directed ones, like:
Stars in My Crown (1950)
Way of a Gaucho (1952)
Stranger on Horseback (1955)
Wichita (1955)
Great Day in the Morning (1956)

But, I guess I'll have to make some decisions after watching the ordered ones.

One column by the great Mike Royko influenced me to see The Wild Bunch and Viva Zapata.

Royko was famous for his changing list of "Ten Best Westerns". Films came and went with Royko explaining why they were added or tossed aside. I remember one list with The Wild Bunch, stating something to the effect (I'm paraphrasing) that it was "a true to life movie about men and if a boy was old enough to see a western--he was ready for the real deal."

The next film was Viva Zapata with only two words underneath: "Same reason."

Psst...Mr. Arkadin...keep it under your hat, but I left 3 or 4 of my favorite Westerns (including THE WILD BUNCH) off of my list based on my assumption that they'd get enough nominations to make the cut, so I wanted some others to have a chance. Call it the Rosenbaum Syndrome (Jonathan doesn't vote for CITIZEN KANE in the Sight & Sound poll for that reason). That's the way we rig elections in Chicago.

Lots of good lists so far. Thanks to everyone that has added theirs. I like the variety of interpretation of the western genre. I thought we'd see a little more of William S. Hart or Tom Mix, but maybe they are yet to come.

I would love to have been able to do 25 instead of 15, too---it's alot easier for me to choose favorite Westerns than over-all favorites. Well, for obvious reasons, DUH! Still, it's such a favorite genre of mine. Yee haw!
